Using FX Pedals with synths....

Ok, so normally when I want to add distortion or anything like that to synths, I simply reamp them through my guitar chain. Now today, I have a keyboard player in the studio who says that if you are just using fx pedals (my OD820 in this case) and not the amp, that I can just run the line out of the synth into the pedal, and then line out.

Is this true, I don't feel like f@ckin up my new toy....

hmmmm
personally, what i would do, is record a midi track off the synth,
edit the midi track,
then play the midi track BACK into the synth while recording the audio out.
