How do you guys use your guitars and make them sound like a bass? Any techniques you could point me to?

Put it on eBay. When it sells, use the money to buy a bass. :p

Honestly, there really is no way to make it sound too decent. You would have to pitch shift it, and add a crapload of bass frequencies to it. Even then it wouldn't even be half as good as a real bass.

Yeah, get a DI and pitch it down, compress, run it through BOD, into a bass cab impulse, and then compressing to fuckery MIGHT help.

But probably not.

pitch -1 octave, give some highs, take some mids, compress the crap out of it and blend it with distortion or whatever i god damn hate your avatar. it's working good for me.

Harmonizer in Guitar rig 4 sounds fine when you turn on only "sub". Anyway its not a real bass. try to find a bass-guitarist who is kind enough to record a bass for you.:headbang:

if you want a serious result, then buy a bass guitar,if you want something not serious for preproduction etc then you can program it

How to make a guitar sound like a bass? Unplug the guitar and plug in a bass instead. Fastest and easiest way to do it.

Can't afford a bass you say? Take all the time you would waste trying and failing to get your guitar to sound like a bass, and instead use that time and effort to work a shitty job for a couple of days and buy a cheap bass on ebay.

Or you could borrow one from a bass playing friend, maybe get him to put down the bass tracks for you? You could even start this really cool thing called a band!

It's something people used to do before everyone started making music on their own in a bedroom, posting questions here about how to make programmed drums sound real, how to make amp sims sound like real amps and how to make a guitar sound like a bass. :bah:

Thanks so much for the words of advise. But please, next time save your bullshit for someone else.

My bullshit meter didn't budge reading that... *taps gauge*

Every bit of that advise is worth your consideration more than trying to mock up a bass tone from your guitar >_>

If you're that unwilling to buy a bass guitar (several can be found for around a 100$ and I'm not talking used.) that would manage to produce a (naturally) better tone than anything you could consider with the earlier route mentioned... Then look into using a free bass VSTi. At the very least, it's much better as an alternative... It should be the only seriously considered alternative imo :)

Dude.. Get a bass. It's one of the most dynamic instruments and you can't just emulate that with a guitar.

I'm sorry if it seems like we're being unhelpful, but the reality is that no matter how much processing you go through with a guitar, it will sound a lot better and with a lot less work just to get a job for a couple weeks and buy a bass.
