Vinyl: How do you approach it?

Vinyl for me is almost entirely a collector's format. I bought the Agalloch records on vinyl and the last Opeth album, etc. Only stuff that I really love and feel I can justify having on more than one format, but the vinyl will only get a few spins over a long period of time as it's main purpose is to sit there and be admired. Records and cover art can be really beautiful in that format, but for my lifestyle, it doesn't serve a lot of practical purposes as I'm on the go a lot.
Well I decided a while back to try and get hold of copies of all my very favourite albums on vinyl, and I've pretty much managed to so far. Other times when I buy vinyl are vinyl only releases, and nice limited edition releases from bands I really like that offer something a bit different from the CD.
If it's just a regular album though, and it's a choice between CD and a vinyl which doesn't offer anything special (extra tracks, particularly nice artwork) then I'll buy the CD, merely for convenience sake. If vinyls were as practical as CDs are then I'd buy vinyl all the time, since they are much nicer in every other respect.

For me, its a format for my favourite albums. I don't have access to a turntable all the time because other people use the room that its in, so I only buy vinyls of albums that I already know and like. When I've made exceptions to the rule, I never listen to what I get and end up trading it away. I love how it sounds and love to have those favourite albums of mine in this awesome format though!

used to have a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuge vinyl collection in the 80's ... when everything was on it.
i praise the day when CD was invented ...
and by the way, you vinyl freaks ... if you are trying to spin it on some shit stereo system ... might as well buy cd's ... because its true nature will never shine through ... and metal on vinyl is a real waste ...

i love older metal like Manilla Road's "Crystal Logic" or Ozzy's solo debut on vinyl, or older sounding metal like Slough Feg's "Twilight of the Idols." Just seems like the sound of this kind of music is suited to the format and sounds pretty impressive through a decent sound system.

I love vinyl don't get me wrong ... it's amazing for a lot of styles of music ... but metal is not one of them.
I think black metal sounds very good on vinyl. Stuff like Burzum, early Darkthrone and "In the Nightside Eclipse", in particullar.

Yeah... stuff that's exclusive to the format for the most part, and then I have a handful of LPs of favorites. Like Agalloch, Katatonia, Burzum, etc... I'd love to get some original LPs of classic 80s, early 90s neofolk stuff, but usually that stuff is expensive.
And then really old stuff, like some Genesis and Peter Gabriel albums... the original releases, and not Analog-to-digital remastered CDs.

The "I'd like to" option...I love looking through vinyl shops and some of the limited edition shit would have an honored place in my collection (especially from labels like Profound Lore and Constellation with their exquisite packages), but with the money I spend on CDs, I can't even begin to set aside money for vinyl I'd likely never play. Oh yeah, don't own a turntable either.
