I 2nd At The Gates...bad ass stuff. On lunar Strain by In Flames there are some strings (either violin, viola, or cello)

I think Lunar Strain uses more than one type of string instrument (cello, violin, viola, etc). I'll have to give it another listen.

Virgin Black uses both violin and cello.

Many prog metal bands use synths that sound like violin, cello, etc. but I can't think of a band that uses one live. I know a prog-rock band that does..... Kansas.

I realise this is a zombie thread, but may as well mention Apocalyptica. Not violinists, but electric cellists. I've always enjoyed both their covers & original material, especially this song.
