Virgin Steele...anyone???

Oh boy... it sounds like I should be glad I missed the year they played ProgPower. I really like what I've heard of them (The House of Atreus Acts 1&2). David DeFeis has his vocal quirks and is easy to parody, but I like his voice and the overall sound of the band, even if it isn't so refined.

If you know and like them, you probably would have enjoyed their set. For the uninitiated, they had two MAJOR strikes against them: 1) Their sound was terrible, and David's vocals were almost impossible to hear; 2) They really aren't the type of band that most ProgPower fans are into.

The House of Atreus albums were pure brilliance.

Didn't I also hear that they didn't use a live bass player?

I love 'em and would love to see them again.

I find it humourous that my 2 favorite performances have been Virgin Steele and Rage, which also happen to be the 2 most ragged on performances by our forum bretheren. It's okay, I like being different.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't really seen Rage's performance getting ragged on here.

It was more about the number of people in the audience...

Which has led to the "Rage Effect" term usage

Their catalog is hit and miss, highlights being Invictus, Marriage of H & H albums, and the genius of House of Atreus albums. I'm really surprised as well how many here don't care for this band, especially since so many here love keyboard driven music and VS use plenty of keys...House of Atreus pt. 1 has some of the most beautiful piano interludes juxtaposed against several great riffs...the band has their weak spots though, avoid Life Among the Ruins like the plague. All this being said, their appearance at PP was a HUGE letdown, they just didn't seem to have the enthusiasm (nor the theatrics) to pull off the kind of music they create in the studio...the flaming sword came off as hokey instead of inspiring...and with no bass player or keyboard player either the tunes really suffered, they stuck mainly to only the guitar driven songs, but again, everything was just flat, one of my biggest PP disappointments ever. I still contend that given the right atmosphere, stage set, full band personnel and playing time they could present a helluva show, but that would require a pretty penny that I don't think too many promoters are willing to throw at them...ah well, enjoy the good cd's for what they are...

I was into them from their debut vinyl back in the early 80's. I have all their recordings in multiple forms and they are one of my top 10 bands of all time. With this said i was very pumped to see them live for the first time i wouldn't have cared if they would have used harps and banjo's. I think the problem with most is the fact that these bands like V. Steele and Rage came to power before their time or whatever avenue they have used for music intel is lacking on vintage bands. I cant fault them for this i just happen to be a very hardcore fan and collector. The fact that I was there when the bands first came out helps a bunch to.

Although I have a TON of respect for these guys for doing what they do, for such a long time and with the same enthusiasm, I just am not a fan of the music. Didn't see them their set at PP other than one song.

I say let them continue doing the good job they're doing regardless of me liking it or not. They deserve everyone's respect in this forum, period.

And again, I'm not a fan.

Too cheesy for my liking between the musical content and the costumes/flaming swords, but the lack of a bass player was the final straw. I don't really like seeing bands without a keyboard player (assuming the music involves keys/samples), but a bass player is a key half of the rhythm section, and not having one live is just sad.
