I am looking to purchase a new vocal mic. My budget is in the $100-$150 range. I need something that can be used for singing as well as screaming.

To get an idea for the types of singing/screaming, visit www.myspace.com/theneologist . That is the singer who will be using the mic and the songs/style that it will be used for.

any suggestions?

rode nt-1a is also pretty good, albeit rather bright, but sometimes that's just right.

other than that, sm7 all the way.

Hey thanks everyone for some suggestions. At the moment I'm kinda leaning toward the Shure SM58 or the AT 3035. Considering i'm using this as a studio mic...I think the AT 3035 may be the better fit...

For anyone thats used this mic....how far do you sing from the mic. I've found in the past for condensors (AT 2025 I think it was) that if I get too close while screaming I get a rattling noise as if the diaphragm is being exposed to too much air flow, but by backing off I really lost some dynamics. Of course I wasn't using a pop filter so i don't know if it was that...or being too close or just not a suitable vocal mic or what. I haven't experimented with that mic all that much...but just curious how far most of you guys using this type of condensor stand. For past dynamic mics I'm alwasy right up on it....so that feeling has carried over into my "singing etiquitte" if you may.

btw, the 2035 is the same as the 3035 but different color

the 3035 will beat an sm58 in a shootout because of the clarity.

Hand held condenser (I have an EV RE 410) with a foam windscreen would be somewhere between the two.

AKG D5 would be better than an SM58 as well.

Well it appears the AT3035 has been discontinued...and that actually the 2035 has replaced it...which is strange. But from everything I've read the two are virtually the same with the exception of color....which I could care less about. So I think I'm leaning towards the AT 2035 now

thanks for the help everyone

had and sold a 3035, it's ok for the price but I wouldn't be that stoked on it. Like someone already said save another $100 and get an SM7. prefect for screamers, plus it regularly beats out my U87 on a lot of singers. kind of depressing.
the thing with an sm7 is that you can eq it to sound like pretty much anything... usually can't say the same for cheap condensers, or some pricey ones for that matter.

Apex 460 used...great c12 copy..used on a Breaking Benjamin album...there is a shootout on gearslutz of the apex 460 vs neuman's etc and guess which most picked...

if its mostly screaming then sm7!

+1 on the SM7.

I'm so glad my studio partner has one, I sold my AT3033SE after using his. It also works on bass and guitar cabs, floor toms and even kick drums!

Best mic for the money.

P.S. Make sure your preamp has enough gain to run it, though. My parter used to have a firepod and had no headroom with it until he got a RNP.
