VOIP

Skype is great; there are also alternatives which you can run an entire phone system through (we use it at work), but the name escapes me right now. I use Skype for overseas calls, and also have a London and Brisbane number attached to it which people can use to get to my mobile. Nice.

You pretty much need broadband for Skype, don't you? I'm looking at getting broadband next year....

Interesting! I might have to give it a try then sometime.....

Oh yeah, g'day Mark! Say hi to Bev for us!

I now work for a company that specialises in VOIP for businesses.

I can't really offer any insight into it though, hahah. I don't have it at home.
Haven't had any problems at work with it - although I've heard the quality can suffer at times. The worst complaint I've had is a bit of lag when dialling a phone number.

Other than that all I can say is it's a pretty good industry to get a job in.

I work for a pretty major VoIP vendor, I have it at home but I don't really use it much, simply because I don't use my landline much at all anyway.

As it stands right now the quality is pretty damn good, and its quite reliable. The drawback is that i'm not aware of any VoIP provider that will retain your rights to the CSG (Customer Service Guarantee), which means if your VoIP goes down for X days you will not receive monetary compensation. Also if you rely on VoIP as your only phone service and your net connection fails you will not have access to emergency services such as 000.

You also currently still need to purchase a normal landline to run your dsl/dialup off, and subsequently provide your VoIP service. That should change come the turn of the year :)

Interesting!

I guess if you have a mobile the 000 thing isn't an issue.

It'll be nice next year then, if you don't need a normal landline. How's that gonna work?

Arcane: Who do you work for? Do you have a Melbourne office?

My company is about to move offices and are always looking for ways to cuts costs, especially because we're all about the interstate and overseas dealings...
