Volume Swells on River Dragon (and others)

I was thinking, I've never seen Nevermore live so I have no idea, but, when Jeff does these volume swells on River Dragon, does he have a volume pedal or does he actually manipulate the volume controls on his guitar?

i think its just work done to the track in the studio..but it could very well be a volume pedal, and to a lesser extent, the knobs.

Actually, the Rev. is dry, not for long, harvest under the full moon. I use a volume pedal, works great
