Vortex Appreciation Thread

*cough*

I think Vortex is with DB mainly for the money...not to say that I blame him. But I have to agree with one of the above posters when he said that sometimes his work with Dimmu can be quite cheesy and forced with tons of autotune. In fact, I prefer his vocals on old Dimmu before they got so polished. Dimmu now has become like a machine with their 100+ tracks in every song and gnat's assing everything they do at the expense of their songs. I like all their releases for the most part, but perfection doesn't equal great songwriting, imo. I'll take Reptile over just about any song they've done in five years.

Reptile, and Insight are very badly edited on the album, the live versions are soooooooooooooo much better, the Live at Inferno bootleg makes me cum daily... however, you are right and he has basically admitted this. He himself says that he's lazy.

I'll post this for you DW since you are also a DB fan..

These are the studio tracks of each song, skip ahead to the part he sings and listen to it. Very edited with effects.

Now download this http://rapidshare.com/files/198252234/Vortex_Live_Dimmu_Bootlegs.rar and listen to these live versions of the songs sang by him, it's like a million times better. His real voice is much more powerful. I mean on some of them there are still minor effects but the Live at Inferno bootleg has the least. I won't listen to the album versions of these song (Except Reptile b/c the live version is only 2 mins they cut out a lot of Shagrath's parts and just let Simen sing, it's better though).

I saw Cubase and was like AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT AGAAAAAAIIIIIIINNNN!!! I have nightmares about that program.

I think that Simen has a much more majestic voice at high ranges, just due to the tone. I don't believe he's a true singer, however, just naturally talented in this way. Vintersorg, imo, is an actual singer whose voice really needs little tuning. Of course everyone uses autotune, even Bruce Dickinson, but listen to the quality of Oedenmarkin's Son (sp?) before he was even in Borknagar...great album and great melodies where he truly shines as both melodic and screamer.

Man I was really bored last night holy shit. I made like 5 posts back to back. Well I hope you enjoyed them. Vintersorg is awesome though, and I like him in his solo bands much, much more than I like him in Borknagar but Empiricism and Origin are epic CDS... Epic isn't that epic but it's good.

I'd have to agree for the most part.
I just find Dimmu's biggest weak point is holding my attention. They have no problem getting it, as usually their albums open up really well but it drags on too long. I tend to only listen to them for short distance walks : /

I still haven't, and want to see them them live. Seems like it would be a really fun show.

Dimmu's always been kinda meh to me with or without Vortex. I'd be pretty satisfied if they folded and Galder did OMC albums full time.

Borknagar and Vintersorg may as well just merge at this point as they are basically identical bands now.
