Waht is SymX's popularity like in Europe/Asia?

Here in Peru (south america) it's not very popular, but we are like 20 people that know them and we consider SX one of the best bands ever...and the good thing is that albums are 5 bucks, so it's very easy to get their music

ok this thread is off topic enough so that i can ask a question without having to make a new one..
It's my brother's 26th birthday next month and he is a metalhead and i am thinkin he MAY dig the SyX..though he likes his metal kinda heavy usually (he likes the Sabbath, the old Metallica, the Megadeth, the Deicide...)
Anyhoo i was thinking of getting him a SyX album for his birthday, but with his slightly heavier tastes I can't decide which would be the most appropriate to try him out on.
So I was hoping everyone could give me some input into what would they chose as a very first album to send to someone to show them this band.. ????

Welcome The Grand Design! More Downunder fans, good to see! How many people realistically could a SX show in Australia pull Shreddi and SR? Do any of you have friends who are SX fans and if so how many? I personally know none.

SR, DWoT would be my pick. The crunchy riffing at the start will grab him. Which reminds me, I lost my DWoT disc last week when some mofo stole my cd deck from my car :( I didn't rip it to MP3 either

At Utopia they have a special edition of the Odyssey with a bonus track and a sleve.

Though DVD's are also a very good gift idea, There are some great metal ones. If he likes Pantera or Sepultura, they both have a DVD with a collection of all their videos which should make his day. :)

Silent Realm... Odyssey would be my pick... that's the album that finally got my "heavier" brother into Symphony X... now he loves them...

If you read the thread about Amaran..you'll see thats not the case at all. There are indeed some female voices i like very much.

Cool! Glad you enjoyed Amaran, Silent Realm!

Kate Bush Rules! should check them out.

First off, i say Odyssey or DWOT for heavy. Also, i believe that gender has all sorts of relevance when it comes to vocals. If it were about drums or guitars or whatever, then i would question that, but disliking female vocals is completely understantable since it is a completely different style than male vocals. I perosonally only like female vocals if they are very well done (nightwish, after forever, within temptation, etc.) I have only heard a few bands that have female vocalists that could have done the same with a male vocalist ( excluding the ones mentioned above... king diamond could do them lol). Bands like Opera IX, Sinergy, Arch Enemy, etc. etc.... though sinergy is the only band with clean female vocals that could just as easily be replaced by male vocals that i have heard.

Hey, just wondering how big SymX is across the ocean. In Connecticut, they are not well known of, although I have voiced many complaints to radio stations for not playing them. Any other advice/ways to spread the word of Symphony X to the ppl?[/QUOT

Just get a t-shirt and show it off! :tickled:

i seriously am not sure Julz.. about how many people SyX would pull here.. i personally don't know any, but then that's because i don't know many people at all.. I do think power metal people at least would go..especially if they were given lots of publicity surrounding it. As long as the word was out there about them, i think they would truly pull a nice crowd. Get them with Dungeon, that would be cool.

Mabey if SyX was supporting Devin Townsend, DT or Opeth they could come down here.
I know a few people that likes SyX, Julz. I know a drummer that used to like prog (so he liked SyX) but now he hates it and likes Death metal. He liked songs like Inferno and King of Terrors tho. I met these guys at metal mayhem that actually knew more about prog than I do. And my friend at school kinda digs SyX (not all that much tho).

"Yeah, ya know I like the heavy stuff like the Sabbath, ya know some Metallica, maybe some Megadeth, you know all the old school stuff like Deicide...wait a minute...Deicide? Deicide?! What the crap?!!"

Sorry, I just couldn't help but read your message and not think of it as a Strong Bad email. You guys can blame Dado-X for my recent strong bad craze.

I would recommend The Odyssey. Although everyone argues over whether or not it is heavier than Divine Wings, I think Divine Wings has a lot of classical elements upfront that maybe the old school metaller wouldn't like as much. The Odyssey, for the most part, is straight up in your face metal, and plus russel sings more metal on it too. And then break him into the progressive stuff with Accolade II, Awakenings, and ultimately The Odyssey. Good luck oh Jehovah Witness of Symphony X, make us proud. I don't think I will ever convert my wife, although when Evolution is playing, I catch her singing along with the chorus!
