It's the same in most other languages, actually, except in mine, but even then we add the suffix "-vlees" ([vlase]) to it. And yes, in my language too, all meat names change except chicken. Chicken changes in French though, it goes from "poule" to "poulet", for some reason. But then, the French speaking Belgians are morons :p
 
There actually was a restaurant in Belgium where, if you selected, say, veal, they'd bring in the calf for you to say hello to before they slaughtered it. It was a sensibilization stunt of an animal rights group. Unsurprisingly, it went bankrupt because everybody cancelled his order after seeing the live animal. Kinda hypocritical to order veal and then get soft-hearted when you're reminded that it's a live animal they're going to butcher, if you ask me, but you probably don't, so yeah.
