Needless to say they can't pronouce the "th" - It's a struggle to ask the shop assistants for an album.

French was HUGELY widespread between russian noblemen before 1812. It was just like a second state language (not saying about peasants, of course, while they were a 80% of population). Of course, we have lots of adoptions from other languages: french, english and german at first.
