I have played around with heaps of waves plugins but really only love the ssl mix buss comp, cla 76, c4 and hcomp. Anybody found freeware or very cheap alternatives that are every bit as good? Some if these plugs are pretty old and $300 just for cla 76 is ridiculous.

Not the same as C4 but depending on what you use it for, you can somewhat achieve similar results (it's a - very versatile - dynamic EQ) : http://www.tokyodawn.net/tdr-nova/

If you're really after those particular Waves plugins, you can still wait as they are on sale all the time.
Just keep an eye on audiodeluxe or plugindiscounts and be patient until the right deal comes up (had C4 and then C6 for a few bucks, SSL bundle for way less than its normal price, I remember seeing the whole CLA comps pack for around 150$ sometimes...etc).

Love it everywhere you'll use a 1176/fast comp, mainly on vocals, bass bus and room mics.

DC1A also awesome, not sure what exactly I'll be using it on but another great suggestion. It just seems to sound great in lots of different situations. Just to keep the ideas coming I asked the facebook group metal audio engineers and quite a few people are suggesting the fabfilter pro mb which seems to be an alternative to c4.

Grab any other Klanghelm freebies too (IVGI saturation, and MJUC Jr / VariMu compressor).
If you lik em, they're all inspired by their "full" plugins, which are really affordables.
The Rocket has a threshold control so you don't really need input gain.
Just set the threshold to your liking, then compensate with the output gain.
Don't forget to switch on "decadence" on the bottom left, it activate oversampling and just sounds better.
If you want to try other comps, I also like a lot Stilwell MajorTom. It's kind of a dbx160 inspired comp (amazing to make a snare snap).
About ProMB, yes it's awesome and it does a lot more things than C4/C6... but it's way far from cheap or free !

Most hardware modeled plugins are pretty costly no matter what company makes them. For SSL and 76 style plugins you can check this website. I think that the best price to quality ratio for a 76 plugin goes to Klanghelm's MJUC, which also offers two other modes.
