Pulled these pics from their Myspace... Maybe Yannick can comment?

Here's a video of Augury tracking drums with Yannick as well where he uses similar mic placement... It's like almost a center overhead and then one to the drummer's right...? Curious as to how it's all panned and the logic behind it as to maintaining an accurate stereo image, especially with the snare...

the placement of the cymbals seems at least as weird to me as the placement of the OH's. but yeah, i can imagine the OH's could have been quite a lot wider with the snare in the center, allthough i can't imagine it giving too much problems when the cymbals are miced this close and if you also roll of quite some lows...

edit: on the video the mics look weirder (higher and even more to the center) and the cymbals look more normal (higher and more spaced) hmmm

The video is a different drummer in a different band so it makes sense that the kit setup is totally different  The more I look at it it looks like he has the cymbals close mic'd more or less. The high hat, ride and right side china all have separate mics so the overheads are really just there for the crashes and splashes.

The video one still doesn't make sense to me though?

yea man...if you think about it, it makes perfect sense that the OH's are pulled in like that when most of the cymbals are crammed into the middle of the kit

Which album was that for? Or is it for the current one they are working on?

Cymbals are grouped in the center (aside from rides, hats, and china, which are all spot-mic'd), so if he placed them wider he'd be picking up unnecessary bleed from the kit, as well as making the cymbals more distant and less detailed, and detail is something you need with this drummer's cymbal work!

006: Pictures are from the current recording session

DSS3: Yeah I'm guessing he panned them out like 50/50 or maybe a smidge wider...

Still don't understand the Augury vid, but it's quite enjoyable to watch Etienne Gallo pound away at his kit regardless!

I think the main reason is to keep them out of the other mics, especially OH's, as much as possible (so it won't be obvious in the highly likely event the kicks have to be mercilessly quantized)

yes it's oktava!!! I always put my oh mic like this. I never use oh mic for my drums sound. The only think i want in my cymbals mic is cymbals. I try to have less snare, toms as possible. I use room mic for my overall drum sound(you can't see room mic on the pic). I use blanket to kill kick drum in the room!!! For augury is not the final set-up. Doesn't seem weird to me!!!
