Just a question, I'd thought I would ask why I am sit here rather drubnk

I was, Sabbath, Zepplin, Jethro Tull, Budgie and many other bands were contanly played in the house hile I was a kid growing up, guess that's whu I am into metal these days. How bout you ya pissant?:hypno:

Sort of, I always liked music from a very young age.

From 4 - 7 I was into Gunners... then I never really got to hear them.

Got into mid-90s top 40 stuff for a couple of years, then got into Metallica when I was 9. ROKKIN ROLL \m/

I wasn't. I know more about the music of my parents generation than they do. Oh sure, they might remember a song here and there, but they certainly didn't have an extensive record collection that I could trawl through.

I kind of was and kind of wasn't. My brother was into grunge mainly, and some metal. That is how I got into Metallica (not at that young an age either, maybe 12ish), and then I made my own way from there. Rage, 3 hours of power and the internet helped me get into some different stuff. It was weird really, growing up in a country town being pretty much the only person I knew that was into metal. Being something different and interesting was part of the appeal I think.

My parents didn't really listen to music much, except on weekends when my dad would drag out his country records. I swear, my childhood until I was 11 was hearing "Country Stampede" and "Best of the West" every Sunday. Then sometimes at night instead of TV, they'd put on some Frank Sinatra records. My parents didn't even have rock albums, except for one Elvis album and a cassette of "Beatles Ballads". The only rock records my father ever owned where two Dire Straits albums that I bought him, and an old Stones compilation.

One day I decided I wanted to learn the guitar. I was in high school by this time, and everyone was listening to New Romantic stuff, which doesn't feature a lot of guitar. So I went looking for music that did, and found Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin and then Maiden, Priest, etc. One day a kid gave me a tape he'd made. The first three songs on it were "Ride the Lightning" by Metallica, "Tyrant of the Airways" by Raven and "Beyond the Black" by Metal Church. The rest is history.

Actually I discovered Maiden because there used to be an ad on for "The Number of the Beast" that showed part of the 'Run to the Hills' clip. I just saw this long-haired guy wearing armbands and screaming and thought "How fucking cool is that?"

I grew up on Country until I was 10 because we used to go on long interstate drives, and all that would be played in the car was Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn and other classic country from the 60s and 70s. Then Mark got a copy of Live After Death and everything changed.

When I was young I liked Michael Jackson and other 80s pop. I still like all that crap now, is great.

One of my earliest metal memories is funny. The first 'Deth I heard was when I saw the clip for No More Mr Nice Guy, and I remember thinking that Mustaine was a woman....an ugly, ugly woman.

Dad used to play Status Quo, Bad Company, Deep Purple and Sabbath's Paranoid album a bit, among other things. I guess that had a bit of an influence; I just took it a lot further in the heaviness stakes.

Same as Spiff, naturally.

Conway Twitty, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Chad Morgan , Kenny & Dolly. I guess that's why I like Americana now, and always prefer music with plenty of melody.

Not much at all. No music was really played throughout the house and my parents don't own a record collection and their cd collection has something around 20 cds in it total which almost never get played.

So the only thing I heard was the classic songs on the radio when mum/dad was driving somewhere.

My parents listened to the following so much, I still know all the words to just about all the sings to this very day.
Ricky Nelson
Johnny Horton
Kenny Rogers
Elvis :notworthy
Abba

Brought up with alot of Country and Irish music, and a few good albums my Dad had stashed away (The Shadows, Cat Stevens, odd things like that). But it was my older brother who influenced me. He's about 8 years older and he was into Ska, Bowie, Queen, The Jam, The Clash - I inherited his entire album and single collection about 10 years ago and as Mark will tell you there isn't a fucking dud in there. It's truly awesome. He would make me compilation tapes of Madness, Bad Manners, Prince Buster, and loads of others which I would play repeatedly until I saw him again and got new ones. The rock thang started from getting into Queen. Brian May used to talk about Maiden and AC/DC so I thought that I should know who these bands where and bought albums. Totally fell in love. :)
