What a wonderful live album

Would you guys consider this their Alive!
By that I mean a band in the pennacle of their career...
but using studio trickery...
I can't bare to listen to Alive! and Alive II and Live After Death for that reason... They are so phony... The audience is loud. I can say the same for W.A.S.P.'s Live In The Studio... I mean Raw! And for the record they are albums that I used to love. Granted Alive III isn't much better but I just think that line-up was the shit...
Yes, I would say they were at their respective career best. I can see what you are saying about studio trickery but it doesnt bother me much, I would imagine a lot of people who buy live albums want to be able to hear everything and for them to sound kick ass.

I named Maiden & Venom for nostalgic reasons because I dont really listen to them now but they used to be my favs when I was younger. I still listen to Live in the Raw somewhat regularly though - one day I'll get the Assassins one.

I think I might be in the minority but I really do enjoy hearing all of the missed notes and feedback of the true live recordings. That's probably why I'm such a huge fan of bootlegs...I know studio tricks are used on 99% of live albums..sadly but some are so blatant that it's sickening...

grateful dead- live dead
grateful dead- europe '72
grateful dead- rockin the rhein
grateful dead- nightfall of diamonds
grateful dead- truckin up to buffalo

Matt, I'm not sure if I knew you were a Dead fan. I've talked about them with some here, and even traded some CDs, but this is a nice list...were you the one who sent me rockin the rhein? Somebody on this forum did. Sorry if I forgot, and it was you.

My fave Dead albums (which are all live, incidentally) are
Dick's Picks Vol. 4
Live at the Fillmore - The Complete 1969 shows
Europe 72 (arguably the least "live" Dead album, but still very good)
The Closing of Winterland
...and a ton more
Of late I've been listening to Three from the Vault, and also "One from the Vault". The latter has Blues for Allah on it (first show after the hiatus), and the former has a BUNCH of good Pigpen stuff...probably my favorite show with him on it.

I kept these all out of my list, since I think of them as being in some whole other genre than your average live album, but broadly speaking, all my favorite live albums are Dead albums. Incidentally, Live Dead is the same group of shows that the Fillmore complete set is from, and it's all good. I sent that to someone on this forum too, I think...was it you?

I don't know why, but I'm always surprised more metal fans aren't also Grateful Dead fans. They are not even remotely hard rock, but there is something about their adventurous spirit and "jammy" nature that I always assumed would appeal to more metal heads...I have one metal friend (a very close, dear friend) that also likes the Dead, and to the best of my knowledge, that's about it.

no it wasn't me who sent you rockin the rhein. no you didn't send me the complete fillmore concerts. i have the little 3 cd set they released to the public called fillmore west 1969 that was like an abridged version of the complete stuff. i have about 15 more dead live albums than i mentioned

they are releasing a 2 cd/1 dvd live set in september from the 1978 concerts they did in eygpt

Rainbow - Munich '77

Awesome bootleg that got "legitimized" a couple of years ago. Better then On Stage!
