Heh, something that might have been done in the past, but my brains are partially dissolved. So, how much of your presumed liking for DT is Mikael's and Niklas' poetry guilty for (general thoughts also welcome)?

i voted for added bonus. i cannot say that i ever got into a band because of their lyrics, and if a band i liked for sound had bad lyrics, unless they were unforgivably stupid/offensive, this would not affect my liking them. and i can be very into a band with very generic-evil, simple lyrics (like arch enemy, except for a few heartfelt breakup songs, but i looooove them anyway). i especially like lyrics from DT and IF. i enjoy (as well as wallow in, identify with...) all that eloquent misery, frustration, selfloathing, regret. i like the very poetic quality of DT lyrics. i cant do that at all. i am way too literal. i also admire the sheer quantity of lyrics per song!

i voted for the first option, although it's grammatically incorrect. :p

i've been in it for the lyrics since skydancer and i still see them as dt's strongest point. yesterday night while driving home and listening to haven i was hit once again by the realization that dark tranquillity really provide me with all the conceptual depth and inspiration i might need from songs.

rahvin.

i voted the first one as well, though you probably put the words randomly. :p

i think good lyrics are a bonus, you know, i even like some Manowar. but here's the difference between a good band and an outstanding band. when i first discovered dark tranquillity, i paid attention mostly to the music and thought "really good band"; then i realized how beautiful the lyrics were, re-listened to the songs more carefully and they became my second fave band. without those lyrics, they'd just be a "good" band with many others. :)

I share the general consensus here and will go with the first option.

I could listen and enjoy their excellent music a lot even if the lyrics were of horrible quality, but I seriously doubt I would have tattooed the band-logo on my chest if their lyrics weren't the best I have ever read.

Simply put: DT lyrics mean a lot to me.

some time ago, i asked alfred to carefully choose and give me some dt songs just because i liked a couple of lyrics. at first, music and growls sounded too damn weird to my "untrained ear"
so yes: dt lyrics are a must :)

errrrr, get prepared to read a confusing post :p

I voted for the first option, cause for me the Dt lyrics are a very important part of the band's "identity" and also because it is a reason why i have such admiration for this band...But it's not as if i like DT only for the lyrics,or that the lyrics were the reason why i started paying attention to DT...As for the "I could live with bad ones as well" part,i can't be sure about it...Of course i listen to bands with not so nice lyrics (even ludicrous ---> Finntroll  ),but i'm not sure whether i would like DT soooooo much if their lyrics weren't so great...

Well sincerily, if it wasn't for the lyrics this now would be a "Yet_another_good_death_metal_band Forum"
Music is great, but it's the lyrics (and they way they're sung) which makes this band be something a step away from the rest of the band with lyrics about the mighty strengh of axes killing christians for the sake of satan and his accountant...

what Venancio said :)

dt lyrics are ace.but i like more when niklas is writing,i mean lethe and hedon have so outright effect on me.
i dare to say that sometimes lyrics surpass their music,or at least that they make a melody even more special.

Heh, I disagree with this. I think the music of DT is very special, and sounds anything but generic melodic death, at least on the pre-Haven albums. What other death band has songs like Crimson Winds, Nether Novas, Hedon, The Gallery? Of course the lyrics are a big part of their appeal, but the music is so original and moving it would work without lyrics too, they just add to the depth.
