what do you guys use for hardcore / metal vocals

For tracking the screaming stuff, I'll usually use an SM7b, Great River MP2NV, & an Empirical Labs distressor at a 6:1 ratio. It smooths things out enough that automating vocals in a mix isn't too labor intensive.

I try to have the vocalist double their parts as exactly as they can. I also use a healthy dose of compression. The doubling can thicken it up quite nicely, and I can automate the vox to use whatever vocal take has the best enunciation (for screaming vocals). I like the doubling quality really well, though.

with ratio at 4 or 8 input at 18.5 out at 18.5 attack at 2 and release at 6,
use all button mode on the plug in i the box for mixing.

god those things are fantastic.

Hey Oz, I'm still using the crappy pres on my Digi002 and I'm guessing that they would be noisy as all outdoors on an SM7 (they only have 60 dB of gain and they're not espescially quiet) but I'm curious if there's any sort of low(er) priced preamp that you know of that would handle it nicely. I'm talking around $300-$400. I'm already considering biting the bullet and getting the RNP.

I would recommend the Groove Tubes Brick
i run SM7b>GT BRICK>RNC
i barely get away with the gain though
here in a year i would like to get the great river

depends on what the singer can do or wants to do. some cats HATE the pop filter nice mic thing and it freaks them out. give 'em an SM58 and put TWO renvox or similar compressors on it (in series) and CRUSH the living daylights out of them. this seems to make the vox guys very comfy and gets the best performance out of them.

Love Curran

Funny thing is, the RNP isn't exactly clean. If you need to add a crapload of gain, go with a GRACE 101. Lots of gain, and very, very, clean.

You can also look for an old Peavey/AMR VMP-2 on ebay. Tons of gain & loads of character. I had 3 of those units at one point, & then I disovered the joys of Neve!

I think it was Metalkingdom who said don't use a 57 on vocals unless you know what you are doing. Not sure exactly who said it (I did a search and couldn't find it) but it is good advice, I think.

I went ahead with 57/58 on my vox until recently. Vocals sound better on my mixes when recorded with a condenser. $0.02

Tons of well known producers will use the 58 on screaming vocals including Andy.

Am I the only guy here who despises this technique in the studio? In my experience, any time a guy cups a 58 in his hands, it sounds like total shit.

That's when I'll hand him an sm7 & say, 'cup this.'
