What do you use to split a signal for AMP/INTERFACE ?

If I understand correctly what you are trying to do, you could just use a DI box, such as this one (see the diagram): http://www.palmer-germany.com/pro/en/PAN-01-DI-Box-passive-PAN01.htm

You'd connect your guitar to the DI box and go from there to your amp ("link out" on the Palmer DI) as well as to your audio interface ("balanced output").

Depending on whether you are using active or passive pickups, it might make sense to get an active one. In any case though, as you were looking for a cheap solution, even a fairly cheap DI box should give you pretty good results.

Any DI box will do.
I just got a ZOOM G3 which would be perfect too.
Clean di out on XLR then on through the FX into amp.
Great little box with lots of great sounding overdrives etc.
See my thread

Thank you guys,
I only have passive pickups, should I buy an active BOX ?

Since I bought a small practice amp, I never record ! I enjoy the fast response and ease of use.
I'm sure tracking with that with be better than direct with the sims. At least, it's gonna be much more fun!
I play with the 5150 emo on the Cube, and the sims are the X50 TSE so yeah, the playback will be natural I guess..

I use a Radial BigShot ABY, and that seems to do the trick nicely.

EDIT:

Ah, shit, misunderstood the question. Yea, any decent DI box would work.

If you have passive pickups, then you need an active DI. If you have active pickups, then you need a passive DI.

This is a bit off topic but could we expand on this a bit? I've always used my passive DI box with any active and/or passive guitars that have come thru the studio, and with decent results. What will i gain by having an active box as well? Or maybe use an active box exclusively?

Without giving you a lesson on voltage, current and impedance; I'll keep it short and simple.

If your source is passive and you use a passive DI, then you end up losing some thump in the bass and also clarity in the highs. It just seems to suppress your signal (at least to me).

Active circuitry will add some noise (no way around it). That is why if you have an already active source, you don't need/want to add another active device in the signal chain. What you do need/want is something to bring that noise down a little and this is why a passive DI works better.

All that said, it really comes down to what your going for. These are no hard and fast rules. :Smokin:

Just get a DI box. For your purposes it shouldn't matter much if it's passive or active. That's not a hard and fast rule, as it depends on the box itself. They're all built differently. I know the Little Labs redeye 3d (what i use) has two different inputs for that reason. But legions of people use the type 85 (active) with emgs (active) all the damn time. If that's good enough for Andy and Colin Richardson, then it's good enough for me.

That's because they might not care about the little extra noise you would get from running active pickups into an active DI. Maybe Andy wants the utmost clean and clear precision that you would get from doing that.

Sometimes it's a good thing to understand why people do certain things, instead of blindly following your idols. It will help you make the right choices for YOUR circumstances.

Noise with through output (like Amp out on Type 85) can be neglected, because Inst and Amp just wired parallel. In case of reamping ADCs and DACs (even top-of-the-line) can give significantly more noise than active circuit ing goog DI-box or instrument pream.
I`m using preamp for active signal splitting, noise can be compared to signal straight to amp, but in case of reamping there is more noise even I`m have ADC/DAC with SNR -120 db.
What bothers me in case of Type 85/10 is high THD at relatively low level, 1% THD for 85 at 5 Vpp and 6 Vpp for 10, my preamp have 0.015% THD at almost 16 Vpp (+22 dbu nominal level) with even less noise than Type 85 (but at fraction of price).
