What High Grade Monitors should I get?

Order several different models from a place that will let you try them all out before committing to buy so you can hear them in your room. Monitors should be based on personal preference and not what others are recommending to you on a forum.

You have a good point. A good monitor is a good monitor, though.

I don't want NS-10s. I don't need something to lie to me. I want an honest speaker, and I hear the Opals do the job.

I've heard some great and poor reviews of Adams as well.

btw. what are you mixing on at the moment ? still on headphones?

I mix on four different things. It may seem kind of silly, but if I master my own work, it has to translate.

-Sony MDR-7509HD: These headphones are very neutral and not at all forgiving. If it sounds like shit on these, it will hurt.

-Computer Speakers: I have a pair that's popular around this forum that treats me very well. They are very honest whether the low end is overbearing or not.

-KRK RP5's: In my opinion, these are horrible. I have my room treated, but these speakers can't handle what limited low end I throw at them, and the HF response is shit. I never turn them on anymore, and for good reason. My mixes sound better without them.

-My car: Most people spend their time listening to music in their car. I usually start on the headphones to hear small details, move to computer speakers and back to headphones, check bass in the car, and repeat. If it sounds great in my car, it's usually done.

We have the high-class ADAM P11 at college and they totaly sound LIKE SHIT!!!!!!!!

We also did a blind shootout between the Yamaha hs50 and the ADAM P11 and the yamaha totaly won....
We heard some traffic noise, while on the yamaha you totaly saw a street in your inner-eye, on the P11 you saw an airplain flying by

also the voice translation was way better on the yamahas

P11 are great for enjoying music, but not for mixing IMHO

sorry, but -> bullshit.

since it's off topic i won't go into details, but let's just say that's about the worst thing i've ever seen on here.

i'm not jeff, but anyways: a7 are similar to ns10 in the way they present the midrange, although not quite as extreme as the ns10. they're superb for critical mix decisions regarding midrange and imaging, but not exactly full range

The ones I compared them to were the Dynaudio BM5a's, Event ASP8's, Yamaha HS80's, and that ridiculous JBL room-correcting speaker set - basically what they have at Guitar Center and is around the same price/league as the A7's. A7's definitely won over all - clearer and fuller than the Dynaudios, more accurate and less hyped than the Events, richer and more detailed than the Yamahas, and the JBL's just sucked huge dick.

I've also worked on NS10's and Genelec 8030's + sub - will eventually get a pair of NS-10's, found the Genelecs to really be 'client pleasers,' as everything sound awesome on them regardless of the mix.

There's really not much else to say. I got the impression that you already had your mind made up before you even made this thread. The Opals are a done deal - nothing in that price range comes close to touching them.

I did sort of, same with the preamp thread I made

I'm always curious to see what people have to say, considering that there's a lot of knowledge on these forums.

Thanks a lot. As soon as the eBay stuff sells, I'll order those Opals.

dude it was a blind shootout, We didnt see the speakers we just listen to it with a blindfold on.

We didnt know the brands too.
The shootout was made with maybe 100 students (all studying audio/video engineering) and most people said, that the Adams werent honest enough.

We listened to classical music, speaking and traffic noise.
The classical music sounded awsome on the adams.
The speaking had too much low-end and very crisp highs
The traffic noise sounded like an airplain.

Maybe we have the worst Adams at college...

A friend of mine owns the A7 and loves them, but he also thought the same about the P11

I have not, Jeff. A monitor that is known for having a ridiculously forward midrange isn't telling you the truth, though. I want flat monitors.

I'll just add, that the time domain response is extremely fast on the ns10's, so transient detail on them is much more apparent. That's probably why they are so unforgiving, combined with the brutal mid range. Basically frequency accuracy isn't all that matters, but the opals have ridiculously fast time domain response as well so they won't be hiding anything from you either.

Love my Focal Twins!
Went to them from hs80s and the difference is night and day.
The mid range on them is great. Very easy to hear both 4-6k fizz and 200-500 mud. Not very fatiguing either. You can mix all day and not loose focus. They also look great with the polished wood cabinets.
