Voxengo Elephant 3. Has many limiting options and is widely considered one of the most transparent software limiters available.

I've heard good things about the Sonnox Limiter also, but I've yet to try it.

I stay away from Waves like the plague, as far as limiting goes.

My top recommendation for getting loud mixes is to fill the spectrum evenly before limiting. Even check the mix periodically with an analyzer if need be. I've always found that when the spectrum is full you don't have to push everything to distortion to get a loud mix. Besides that, I feel what Ermin said about limiters is correct.

there's a freebie called classic master limiter which is pretty good imho. very straightforward, but also imho quite transparent if used correctly (read: carefully)

If you want a loud mix, you need to boost the mids so that they aren't overpronounced, but still much louder than the low and high frequencies. Tube saturation plugins also help. But you'll be in for a sound like Arch Enemy's latest, Crionics' Neuthrone, and so on. It may or may not be to your liking.

That's the Kjaerhus plugin - problem with that one is the channel volumes are not linked so a peak on one side will nudge the panning around. Not good for the 2-buss!

Just switched over to Elephant myself. I still like the Waves L for some stuff - but Elephant seems to sound better and can be pushed a little harder without some strange artifacts.

You have to try the Flux stuff. They give you a working demo but it won't save presets or operate at really high Sample Rates. I've been really impressed by their stuff lately. I think the multiband limiter is called Alchemist. Give it a whirl

Get the timeworks mastering compressor, its great. Ive ditched the L2 now, or use it sparingly as it seems to do bad things for me.

You have to watch out with this one as the name can be misleading. This piece of software is neither a compressor nor a limiter. It is in fact a clipper, and it will distort your mixes very badly if used incorrectly.

Seriously? Jesus christ what a misnomer, good lord!
