I am just curious to find out what makes music heavy. Apparently bands like Slipknot, Static-x, and Sevendust aren't "metal". These bands make music that is as hard as any but are being labeled as "power pop" by various people on this forum.

This question begs for arguements of opinion.

OK - I'll start:

Not all inclusive, but I don't necessarily equate "heavy" with metal -

I consider a heavy sound one that has sonic resonance with the drums and/or the bass. I've heard many metal songs that are fast, but not necessarily heavy. I haven't heard many voices I consider heavy. I know I'm sounding vague - but it's difficult for me to explain my definition. Heavy is weight - it has to push. So I look for that sound that drives through my chest. Metallica's Black album is heavy to me (just for examples sake), more so than their earlier stuff.

You are so right dude. Here is a list of songs that i consider "heavy" to check out:

sevendust - waffle, rumblefish
metallica - sad but true
machinehead - ten ton hammer
coal chamber - tyler's song
in flames - only for the weak
pantera - this love (the latter half)
Rob Zombie - meet the creeper
alice in chains - man in the box
megadeth - symphony of destruction
godsmack - awake

this stuff may not be as hardcore as you guys like but these songs really get my blood pumpin!!

I voted other - so I'll specify.

Although I believe drums, guitar and bass sound play a huge role in "heavy," for me heavy contains a huge emotional component. Heavy is dramatic and passionate. So drums, bass, electric guitars, and speed do not necessarily define heavy. Check out Analog Kid's "So Long" cover, and listen to how "heavy" it gets near the end and you'll have some idea of what I'm talking about.

I voted OTHER... to me it is the groove of the music... I consider Nu Metal (the heavier stuff like Sevendust, Puya, Machine Head, Soilwork, even though they ain't Nu Metal they have some groove to their tunes, especially Like The Average Stalker or Neurotica Rampage) to be the heaviest stuff. That stuff just has this definite GROOVE that makes you wanna bang your head and destroy things. I don't get that when i listen to most of the brutal death metal. Vocals to me don't play much of a role at all in the heaviness of the music. I guess i should have voted tone of guitars though because they are what causes that groove. How fast the music is to me doesn't have a whole lot to do with making the music heavy either. I mean usually when it gets slower i consider it more heavy because i just sorta... drage the heaviness out... hard to explain. But i do tink Ten Ton Hammer by Machine Head is one of the heaviest songs i have heard and it isn't fast at all.

Lol. He said hardcore.... how cute.

You want HEAVY??

Pick up Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve album... Soul Burn and Suffer in truth have to be the heaviest works ever...

You are mistaking 'HEAVY' for 'GROOVE'.

Heavy and Groove in my mind have a strong correlation in my mind... but yeah actually i have changedmy mind... Meshuggah i think is the heaviest band around... But i still think a lot of the heavier Nu Metal is damn heavy in my books.

IMO, heaviest band is Cryptopsy. It's rediculous how heavy they are. And it's not like they're just noise either, these guys are fucking virtuoso's on their instruments. And to me they definitely have a groove. They are super super heavy, but they are also super super good. I love em. Real talent, don't care what anyone says.

Cryptopsy. I'll have to check them out.

But defining heavy. Ouch, that's a hard one. Heavy I suppose is that sort of power, aggression and emotion in music.

Heavy Metal is now such a ridiculously diverse genre, compared to say punk, which is just punk.

I spose that Heavy metal is defined by distorted guitars, dark sounding tunes, not upbeat, like punk music, and diverse.

Of course, metal can be upbeat, can be bright, and isn't always distorted.

Metal would have been easily catagorized and defined 10 years ago, but now it is such a diverse genre that it is nearly undefinable.

hmm.. maybe someone here can define it.

Darkane are fuckin´ heavy but influenced by Meshuggah so that explains it, check out convicted, fast and heavy shit.

Heavy is a band on Relapse called Mastodon that my band played with the other day....damn they were heavy. Check them out.

To me there are two different types of heavy. The obvious "heavy" guitar tones (wall of deep sound..etc). Then there is the emotional heavy, Example of emotional heaviness...Anathema - Eternity is one of the heaviest albums of all time IMO.

I just bought Mastodon's CD ($5 with free shipping for 5 songs). Pretty good stuff. Several of their members used to be in Lethargy.

two of them were in Today is the Day as well. They stayed at my friends house after they show and were cool as shit.
