Just curious, have any of you found that there's much difference between USB and firewire?

Do you record / playback straight from your external hard drive, or from your P.C / Mac first?

:u-huh:

occasianally backup to lacies to transfer between the studio and home server.
wouldnt wanna rely on em too much though

Lacie 500Gb firewire. Actually I use a macbook pro and I record on my External Lacie. Firewire is much more faster than Usb.
Lacie's have also eSata port so you can connect it with this port and it's faster than firewire.

I use western digital drives, connected via Firewire.

Never had any major problems. [ sometimes they aren't picked up first time.. but I think that's the process in which I connect / power them on ]

as far as i know USB 2.0 is faster then firewire but its speed varies, firewire is capable of a steady data stream rate, thats why a lot of digital video cameras come with a firewire port. in the long run firewire can end up being faster, even better firewire 800.

and if your computer supports it install a pci slotted e-sata and you can get blazing speeds from an external hard drive. the speeds are almost as fast as an internal hard drive (only a fraction slower because they run through a pci 1st) but in theory are capable of running an operating system without compromising system performance.

even better LAN over a gigabyte connection to a dedicated backup server (doesn't have to be a fast computer), thats what i have all my computers doing, they all automatically sync their data with a server in my house (in RAID) to keep everything backed up and safe. i use a pentium 4, 1gb ram for my file server.

firewire 400 : 400mbit/s
usb 2.0 : 480 mbit/s
firewire 800 : 800 mbit/s
eSata : 3Gbit/s

Simply choice;)

Usb 2.0 sucks because of the data packages!!!!

Minimum:
7200rpm usb 2.0

great:
eSATA
7200rpm
16mb+ cache

good:
firewire 800
7200rpm

Anything you'd care to recommend (in a similar sort of price range if possible)?

- Some good suggestions already of course -

LACIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I payed 134€ for a 500gb external HD with 7200rpm ,16mb cache ,Firewire400+800, usb 2.0 and eSATA.
It has a metallic case, so heavy you can kill clients with it, when they piss in your studio!!!!

Western digital, raptor for recording connected via e sata, en another western digital 7200 for back ups.

I payed about 100€ for a 1000gb external HD with 7200rpm ,16mb cache usb 2.0 , and this was about 6 months ago or something

wouldnt get so excited about lacies kids.... mine died, fortunatly after id backed it up, but im getting a glyph..
grrrrrr

in the long run firewire can end up being faster, even better firewire 800.

i read something about a year ago stating that a new FW protocol has already been developed that's something like 4x faster than FW800, and over the same ports and cables

not sure when the technology will start popping up in PC's, but it'll be pretty sweet regardless!
