What were your 2012 Discoveries?

Best new band I discovered in 2012 has to be Corsair:

For older bands I never knew before tops would have to be Helloise. I got a DVD compilation of 80s Dutch TV footage with bands like Highway Chile, Bodine, Defender and Helloise. As soon as I heard "Cosomogony" I was hooked!

I am already worn out of this female fronted occult metal acts. Quickest run of a new trend for me. While they are not bad...just nothing to make me want to go back and listen to more.

It doesn't happen often, but I have to agree. While I like most of them, the "special" factor has ended as all of these bands seem to sound exactly the same.

yep, they all just bleed together....when I first heard Blood Ceremony it was something different. I got the CD....it was Ok, never went back to it. I recommended it to a few people who I knew dig that stuff but I am done with that genre.

Diamond Plate - saw them open for Testament and was blown away. A great high-energy, thrash set. I love seeing bands have fun on stage, and these guys were loving it. Lots of hair flying as well!

Ghost - I thought of them as a total gimmick band until I took a little time and listened to the music. Simple, catchy, fun riffs and a throwback to the real old-school version of metal. Really looking forward to the second album!

Volbeat - I also had these guys written off as a gimmick until I saw a clip of Jon Schaffer playing with them over the summer. He wouldn't do that unless he really thought the band was pretty cool, so I gave them a shot and couldn't believe how awesome they are. My favorite bands are the ones that are truly unique, where nobody else can ever attempt to sound like them. Volbeat fits that description perfectly.

The Haunted - their debut ranks up there with the best thrash records of all time. A perfect combination of old-school riffing melded with the Swedish sound. I've been obsessed with this record for the past few weeks, along with One Kill Wonder.

Strapping Young Lad - Devin Townsend is one crazy mofo. Insane musicianship combined with a truly odd sense of humor and personality. I only have the greatest hits package, but it's slamming. Love the songs from City the best, and I need to explore this band some more.

Soulfly - I used to love the first record, then grew tired of the world music/tribal influence. I bought Enslaved this year after reading Max talking the record up of being heavier due to enlisting the drummer from Borknagar. I was really surprised and bought the prior 3 albums as well, back to Dark Ages. Right now, Max can do no wrong in my book.

Behemoth - I bought The Apostosy on a whim, just to see what they're about. It was alright, but Demigod knocked my socks off. I prefer death metal bands to inject some melody into the music, so these guys are one of the more brutal sounding bands that I enjoy.

I - I had heard a few songs from this band when the album came out in 2006, but never really cared. I got into Immortal about two years ago and realized that I needed to go back to it and give it a listen. Take out the blast beats from Immortal, and let Abbath sing more like Lemmy, and this is the album that you get.

This isn't the first time I've seen people say that about the female occult rock 'trend' but really, what else is there? You have Jex Thoth, The Devil's Blood, Blood Ceremony, Jess and the Ancient Ones, MAYBE Cauchemar counts.....5 bands doesn't really make a trend IMO. Who am I missing? I love that shit.

The Haunted used to be an amazing band up through One Kill Wonder.

Made Me Do It instantly reminded me of Reign In Blood when it came out (IE - Quick and catchy memorable thrash gems). They were a great live band too in their prime. Hadn't really kept up with them over the past 8 years or so.

Christian Mistress? I have no problem with this trend. The bands are good, and the albums are fun.

I actually just really hate the band name, so much so that I don't even want to check them out. Ha!!! How is that for metal elitism!!!!!!!!!

I EAT METAL FOR BREAKFAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :heh:

Haha...the new Orden Ogan is one of my top releases this year. Just good power metal similar to Blind Guardian and Gamma Ray. There are a few weak tracks but I enjoyed it a lot more than the previous album Easton Hope. One of few CD's this year where when the album ended I played it straight through a few times.
