Greetings

My school is full of typical nu-metal, skating Limp Bizkit fanboys. And if that isn't sad enough, it gets worse. One of them started wearing a Danny Filth ring, a long, black coat and is telling all his cool nu-metal friends how great Cradle of Filth is. Ofcourse, he hasn't gotten any farther than Cradle yet, I think, since they're pretty famous, to say the least. But imagen people like him having CD's like Haven, next to their Linkin' Park collection, in the future.
Though people like this are still more into the cool, catchy Linkin' Park -like guitare riffs etc. So I doubt that things like Damage Done could ever reach them, and if it would, they'd just go like "Yeah, it's cool, but not that good. I think they try too much to be like .Calibre (=copy of an imitation of a nu-metal band)" Seriously, two years ago, the "nu-metal kids" plague began, it's now evolving to something far worse.

Yes, the end of the world is near, but who would've ever thought it'd be brought to us by ignorant kiddies...

boys will be boys. have a bunch of idiotic kids ever made a difference? what if they like nu-metal, louis armstrong, frank sinatra, la tarantella or their parents farting in a plastic bag?
all this trying to single out nu-metal as "the enemy" reminds me a lot of concerned middle-class relatives worried about the evil influences of heavy metal on their youngs.
don't you ppl always complain you're being ostracized because of long hair/metal music/wearing black and all this stuff? now take a look at your own attitude.

rahvin.

You can't deny that there IS a problem as the number of posers is increasing because the mainstream music industry is only stimulating it. About 5 years ago you still had a mainstream music world in which you could find really good mature bands who had something useful to say and who innovatively put a lot of effort into their work. Bands like that are now very hard to find in the mainstream, why?, because the music industry has noticed that all the kids today like to be 'cool' so they only give them the sort of "fuck authority" music they can use to be cool. I do hope that this will turn around some time soon...

Ofcourse this doesn't affect the more mature listeners who are more into alternative and underground things like most people on this forum (except for Tirandil with his N'Sync obsession...).

Ah, just convert the buggers...

Seriously.

I was a nu-metal kid when Ormir found me, although not very extreme... I was kinda getting bored of it, but he turned me into a real life fan. Its possible. Its good.

You have hundreds of little buggers out there, all interested in heavy music... Its worth a try anyway.

Music you listen to is not music that belongs to you.. personally I don't care if some "nu metal kid" starts to go for Dark Tranquillity or any other band I like - does it really matter?

agree@rahvin

I think it's great that some kids are showing interest in the underground music. Poser or not, what's the harm. Maybe they will convert and help his/her friends see what they are missing. A growing fan base is not a bad thing, even though most around, seem to think so.

I'm currently trying to get my nefuew and niece into the underground. 'Cause currently they are listening to Linkin Park, Blink 182 type bands. Wish me luck.

This is nothing new.

It just so happens that I have Linkin Park and Dark Tranquillity in my album collection, and I like some 'nu-metal', at least those who try to branch out from a base of nu-metal but make it worth listening to, like Ill Nino, etc. Before I heard of DT, most of what I listened was nu-metal, but I like listening both types of music.
DT are obviously in a league of their own when it comes to musical creativity and talent, but I also appreciate the stripped down feel of nu-metal.

I gotta say I only like nu-metal if it has a different vibe than run of the mill stuff, ie. a decent vocalist ala Disturbed, Linkin Park (debatable until I hear, hopefully, more 'singing' on their second album, but judging from My December and Crawling there is promising talent in Chester), Spineshank, Trapt, Spiritfall, The Blank Theory, etc.
Basically I like mainstream 'crap' and underground stuff that nobody's heard of, the kind of bands you brag about because you're the only person who's heard of them......lol.......

I get your point totally though. And I hate COF. damned too high-pitched. Give me Stanne any day.

I'll shut up now, I'm rambling boringly.

i don't get all the mocking about new metal kids. i mean, what were you listening to when you were beginning to enjoy music? for me it's been roxette and brian adams. this is something i use to laugh about, but why should others? everyone starts with some music, you have to if you want to get an objective view on the matter. and i believe that you simply can't get into, let's say, black metal, from nothing. there have to be some steps in between.
and as for the nu metal base which is growing right now, i for one am pretty glad, for nu metal is something i much more like to see on tv and hear on radio than some r&b or dancefloor crap. what you do, tirandil, is just seperating youself from people which are closest to you (music-wise of course). i hate this elitist behaviour. do you really think you are something better because you listen to bands that few have heard about? think again.

edit: typos

Right, ofcourse we all listened to silly stuff when we were young and unaware of what 'quality material' is. So you grow up, and automatically you start looking around for more mature stuff in the mainstream, but I think the problem is that the music industry sees that crappy music is more succesful. So what I see now is kids growing up, and instead of switching to more interesting mature bands they just switch to the more cleverly marketed products which are not really different from the stuff they listened to when they were 10 years old.
A line has to be drawn: there are products and there is art. I'm not saying one is better than the other, some people prefer products like Britney Spears' new album over works of art like DT's new, for whatever reasons it may be.
But in my opinion the problem is that the music industry is brainwashing the masses to make them think that these products are indeed mature deep works of art. This then creates people who will debate with you on why N'Sync is infinitely more brilliantly composed than the new Therion album you just put on.
Bottom line: a lot of people are easily affected by these marketing methods and it's making them very narrow-minded.

I'm lucky mine is a "free" school, you can go there wearing total black clothes and upside down crosses or dressed in pink, red and green with silver hair and nobody tells you anything about your clothes (well, except for someone!)
Anyway i don't like nu metal, but i don't care about nu metal listeners at school i can hate someone or like it, it depends by the person, not exclusively by the music

i want to point out that me and rahvin were called conformists by one girl who used to listen to system of a down all day long. rahvin pointed out the inherent absurdity back then

i don't like new metal and as a punk rocker i have already been through "how can this crap go side by side with the stuff i like?" in 1994 or later, when i knew that bad religion were touring with blink-182. it's not that terrible, just stupid, but then again, people *are* stupid.

h

Cybercrash said it all. Kids these days are victims of mainstream, which gets more clever every day.

But I was just annoyed by seeing this nu-metal Limp Bizkit fanboy wear gothic clothes...

just let them find their style. they're maybe not ready yet to have one, they need to experiment. i think that's quite a good idea, often something new evolves from these crossovers. although even i would find it hilarious seeing a kid with black coat, red cap, dreadlocks and corpsepaint listening to manowar. but oh well, that's their stuff, not mine.
and on another note, there are people who extremely value music (like me), and there are those who don't give a fuck. brainwash-happy-chart tunes then come in handy, and i can't blame people for taking the offer and listening to some of these. among of my best friends are some who listen to chart music; does this really say anything about them? are they conformists? are they narrow-minded? are they stupid?
you don't believe all this, do you? go lock yourselves up in your own small world where everything as like you want it to be.

Could it really be all that bad if these kids are getting into DT? They're supporting the band and label by doing so which is always good and that has benefits to it. Im looking forward to seeing DT over here in the states and I think these kids make it possible by supporting the band along with the rest of us, Poser or no. The way i see it, We all got into underground music somehow, It was first moonspell and PL that did it for me and i was into stuff like George Lynch and Megadeth, So we all got into it somehow and if DT is a good enough act to convert them, All the better!!:)

o'm so open-minded that my motto is "i like anything that doesn't suck" i do try to avoid nu-metal at all costs, but if there's absolutely nothing at all on the radio except the latest nu-metal song and if it's melodic or senseful enough, I'll sit through it. Clothes, and looks in general, just plain don't matter. I once had a friend who wore a leather jacket, spikes-a-plenty, a black and white bandanna, and was singing "we're havin' a heatwave" like Marilyn Monroe. And, one time after finishing ...And Justice For All, I turned on the radio and enjoyed the newest Kylie Minogue song. I listen to a lot of stuff that would shock the masses, but i don't care what they think! I'm me! Even if Hansi Kürsch lost his voice in a freak accident and BG's new lead singer was a total death-banging growler, I'd still listen to them if it was quality music! Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, and if you want to criticize me for mine, so be it... I just won't read your post.
