I remember being one of the only kids who never rode the trends in school, and have always had a gradually evolving taste in music, rather than a series of silly phases. There were plenty of posers in my high school. The kind of kids that talked all about Everclear one year and then came in the next year all badass wannabe wearing Slipknot t-shirts. It's something that's always existed and always will. I think some nu-metal bands have a few catchy songs, but, at least in my opinion, they get boring extremely fast and the albums as a whole are never very good.
My college roommate blasts just about the crappiest music I can think of. Think about a mix of Nelly, Master P, Dave Matthews Band, bad country stuff and a whole bunch of annoying rap songs and the cheesiest rock songs ever made. It was an utter shock when I heard something cool like Bohemian Rhapsody coming from his stereo one day... only the effect was ruined by the playing of a song called "Hos in different area codes" or something like that, directly afterwards.
The majority of the guys in my building and on campus are like this... a huge population of jock meatheads and preps that listen to music that makes my ears want to bleed. They're not worth the effort to show them good music, and I could really care less. I'm just very thankful for the invention of headphones, so I can have some peace in my sonic wasteland of a campus.
