When the world comes tumbling down.

Vulture: Now even if you're not into powermetal, or into Blind Guardian, you can't say that Hansi Kürsch lost his voice. Imo, he has one of the greatest voices I've ever heard, in powermetal, and his voice hasn't changed a bit (in a bad way) since his first album. :heh: :D

@cybercrash: i might agree that the average quality of music is decreasing, but this doesn't just work for chart songs or mainstream. i might also agree that listening to duran duran in the eighties had objectively a bit more value than listening to many mainstream nu-metal or rap/metal bands these days, but i merely think this curve is going down since the beginning of time (well... ;) ). ten years from now easy-listening music will be so crap that we'll think back to these days with a sense of longing, maybe.

moreover, i agree with what vultureculture said about ppl who don't care that much about music: we're like wine connoisseurs saying those who drink bad wine are idiots. why? maybe they're just interested in something different altogether. don't you feel the curse of the "star trek zealot" looming over you? :p

I'm just gonna say I have a "Big Tent" as far as music is concerned. I can appreciate technicality, etc; but I dig some "simple minded" stuff too.

*shrug*

this whole anti nu-metal jihad is kinda silly.

nu-metal kids? Well at least they're not into rap, which is the case here... rap/hip hop is the thing to listen to. Or at least it was! So you see all these 14 year olds walking around wearing Wu Tang Clan shirts, when few of them have actually heard any Wu Tang Clan music. So... at least the nu-metal kids have discovered the wonder of heavy music (I wouldn't really praise the guitar work on any nu metal song I've heard so far, so I won't say "guitar" which I normally would), so at least there's a chance that they'll move on from the nu metal and start discovering the really good stuff!
Not that I hate all nu metal... as with all other genres, there are some good stuff and some shit... you find it in death, thrash, whatever else. But since it has become a trend thing, a lot of shitty bands have released albums & gotten contracts when they really shouldn't have or weren't ready.

I remember being one of the only kids who never rode the trends in school, and have always had a gradually evolving taste in music, rather than a series of silly phases. There were plenty of posers in my high school. The kind of kids that talked all about Everclear one year and then came in the next year all badass wannabe wearing Slipknot t-shirts. It's something that's always existed and always will. I think some nu-metal bands have a few catchy songs, but, at least in my opinion, they get boring extremely fast and the albums as a whole are never very good.

My college roommate blasts just about the crappiest music I can think of. Think about a mix of Nelly, Master P, Dave Matthews Band, bad country stuff and a whole bunch of annoying rap songs and the cheesiest rock songs ever made. It was an utter shock when I heard something cool like Bohemian Rhapsody coming from his stereo one day... only the effect was ruined by the playing of a song called "Hos in different area codes" or something like that, directly afterwards.

The majority of the guys in my building and on campus are like this... a huge population of jock meatheads and preps that listen to music that makes my ears want to bleed. They're not worth the effort to show them good music, and I could really care less. I'm just very thankful for the invention of headphones, so I can have some peace in my sonic wasteland of a campus.

rahvin, people who drink bad wine ARE idiots. there's no question about that. :)

i knew you were going to say that the moment i finished writing that metaphor. i briefly considered changing to something different, but then asked myself: why preventing my best friend from increasing her post count and doing the same myself when telling her i had thought about it? :p

*hug* three hoorays for cooperation then!
by the way, you should be happy i am saying that, since of course on wedsneday you're going to enjoy the consequences of this very theoretical stand possibly. ;)

all this trying to single out nu-metal as "the enemy" reminds me a lot of concerned middle-class relatives worried about the evil influences of heavy metal on their youngs.
don't you ppl always complain you're being ostracized because of long hair/metal music/wearing black and all this stuff? now take a look at your own attitude.
