Looking to build some DIY sound absorption. Anyone know of a good place to pick these up at for an ok price? Lowe's and Home Depot looked at me like I was dumb when I asked for it and showed me the pink stuff.

I figured I'd have to go internet but as long as the price is right, its all good. Thanks for any help gents!

If you find somewhere, let me know. I know you can get it online, but wouldn't really want to ship that.

I too was laughed at in Home Depot. :( They just don't understand good sound absorption. ;)

edit: Interesting Thread: http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=147777

and also: http://www.atsacoustics.com/item--ATS-Acoustics-Rigid-Fiberglass-Board--AB2.html

Can't weigh in on the quality of the ATS stuff, as it isn't Owens Corning, but idk. It's a little cheaper. Also, I was talking to my dad's friend who is a drywall and ac specialist, he said that Duct Board looks very similar to rigid fiberglass and me be a little more readily available in your area.

Also, I was going to use drop down ceiling panels. Take off the outside reflective layer, and glue a few together. Might work, but I never got around to it, so I can't say if it was a good idea or not. lol.

In the US, just grab a phone book and start calling places under "Insulation Materials and Supplies" or "Insulation Contractor Supplies"

You can ask for Mineral Wool or Owens Corning 703. Some carry an equivalent to 703/705 by other brands that are cheaper but have identical specs.

My understanding is that the main use for this is for things like boiler insulation and steam pipe/room insulation. With the fire ratings on them, I guess they are used in a bunch of other industrial applications. Typically they will have the paper backed and pipe form too.

Every place I called knew what it was, knew all about it, and gave me prices. Some places sell by the bundle, some will sell by the 2x4 sheet.

When I first did my treatment, Mineral Wool was way cheaper than OC703. But I guess a bunch of it is getting used up since Katrina in New Orleans. So OC is half the price of Mineral Wool.

1-800 GET PINK puts you in touch with Owens Corning. They let me know of 2 local suppliers of 703. I still had to order it from those suppliers by the case. 12 sheets of 2' x 4' x 2" OC 703 cost me about $100.

I work at Lowes and OC703 is available to order from a local insulation distributor. In fact, I ordered 24 sheets of 2"x2'x4' panels today.

First, don't just ask where rigid fiberglass boards are. No stores carry them, hardly any store employees will know what it is and yes, you will get directed to batts, not rigid boards if you do so. Lowes doesn't even carry Owens Corning products, so you'll never find it on a shelf there.

Talk to someone that works in commercial sales, they're much more familiar with the ordering process for non-stocked items as such. There's a good chance that they can find a distributor to get OC703 from.

If that fails, the brand of insulation that Lowes sells, Johns Mansville, makes a line of rigid boards called Insul-Sheild. Here is the test data from their website: http://www.specjm.com/files/pdf/InsulShieldDataSheet.pdf I/S300 actually performs slightly better than OC703.

Good luck.

The build is going slow, but good so far. The walls for my live room are built, but it still needs the hardwood flooring, paint and trim. The rest of the building is being fully remodeled as well. I'd love a hand...I'll let you know if I'm going to organize another project sometime soon.

I'm gonna make a construction thread one of these days...but here's a few pics of the work for now.

Search for "insulation" in your area (I just used google maps), and call anyone/everyone close to you. I lucked out with the first place I called. They referred me to a distributor who referred me to a sales guy who referred me to a local hardware store that the sales guy could sell it to me through (He couldn't sell it to me direct so I had to got through the hardware store) Even with all of the middlemen I still ended up get 2' x 4' x 2" sheets in twelve sheet bundles for $105 a bundle (that's including tax & there's no shipping charges). So that's about $8.75 a sheet, more than half of what you can get it for online with the shipping. And I can just call the hardware store whenever I need more now.

The online store prices are steep, and shipping charges are rediculous - one place wanted $160.00 just to ship 3 bundles.

a)no menards on the east coast

b)i can pretty well guarantee they don't stock 703 or equivalent products

You can guarantee that they don't stock OC 703? Because this week's ad has it listed on sale, and I bought some there a year ago and made bass traps with it. I guess that must have been my imagination.

seeing how i'm a department manager at one of their stores and spent some time in the building materials department, i would say i'm fairly well-versed in their product selections

i tried ordering 703, but was told by the owens-corning rep that we're not an approved vendor for any of their insulation products - we only sell their shingles. i then tried to order the johns-manville equivalent, and was told by our corporate vendor rep. that they would only ship it in mass quantities.

however, if you can show me where in the current ad rigid fiberglass is listed, i'd be quite appreciative...all sales flyers can be found at http://www.menards.com/index.do

Wickes do a pack of 5 High Density Rockwool Slabs for about £40 if anyones in the uk... they've got shitloads of insulation products and its all really good value. Went in there to get the price for my order the other week and on the bog standard loft insulation, some bags were buy one get one free.
