It probably can be classified as black metal with folk music. There is far too much singing and acoustic guitars for it to be considered pure black metal. I'm pretty sure you just said something to that affect about 2 posts up. ^

I still don't know if the person who mentioned Ulver's debut was talking about Bergtatt or Vargnatt, because apparently people actually consider Vargnatt to be their debut.

Yep, Vargnatt is the one, and it's Ulver's first album. I like it, but it's not something I'll listen to often. I'll be in the mood for that kind of music maybe once every 6 months or so hehe. There may be flutes, but it's still more of a black metal album than anything Dimmu Borgir is putting out lately, for example.

As for Bergtatt - one of the finest albums I have ever heard. There are just moments of pure melodic "bliss" on that album. And imo, Garm is the greatest Black Metal vocalist I have ever heard and likely will never be topped. It's so Grim to perfection. Much the same can be said about his clean vocals - the dude, to me, is one talented human being.

I'm sorry, I was being an ass.
On topic, I really enjoy Bergtatt, minus one or two tracks, Nattens Madrgial I really enjoy two tracks and could care less about the rest. Kveldsanger is alright to listen to occasionally but I get the feeling that Ulver might have been biting off a wee bit more than they could chew with that one. I have the same feeling about Will Blake etc etc... which I think has some great moments but overall leaves me a bit cold.
I'm not a huge fan of Ulver's more minimalist works, but then I haven't listened to them a whole lot. Really like Perdition City and Blood Inside though. I think I would say that the two periods appeal to me approximately equally.

Impossible question to answer. I hold Ulver up there amongs the best of Scandinavian music, both the early black metal material and the later electronic surrealism.

They are though like 2 different groups. And choosing one over the other would be hard.

The black metal release Bergtatt is just one legendary album, start to finnish it is a perfect black metal that takes into the depths of nordic darkness, mythology, nature and coldness.

And then the releases by the later electronic Ulver. Perdition City really proved that this new ground was well worth it and at this point all worry and longing for the black metal Ulver were gone. Then came more releases and more exelent work, like the Svidd Neger soundtrack.

I cant choose, I love them both.
