Nor. Cal.
I'll be there. :headbang:

I don't know how i found the funds this year....but i did. And i'm ready for another awesome show. I'll be there for all four nights. I can't wait. And i hope to see some familiar faces. I'll be there with my younger brother and one other friend. It's going to be AWESOME!!!

We should have a night where we all where our BARfest shirts. :kickass:

----> For those going.......who are you most looking forward to? And who do you think might surprise ya?

I'll be there for all 4 nights too. Since we are driving, we won't get into town until 7-8. Cutting it real close for the Mountain King, but I do have tickets!

That would be cool to represent one night. There should be enough of us there to make a difference too!

Most looking forward to Freak Kitchen, Redemption, Vanden Plas, Krucible, and Jon Oliva. I'm not much on the power metal side, but I think Firewind is going to kick some as and surprise people. I'm also looking forward to Threshold and Pagan's Mind.

This would've been my 8th PP, but I missed 2 & 6 for reasons that weren't fun.

Looking forward to my 2nd BAR Fest!

From most anticipated to least......

1) Pagan's Mind - Love this band! Most excited about this. Them being announced alone made the decision whether i would attend again (i mean really, i would love to attend every year....but i don't know if i can afford this trip yearly....o_O.)
2) Virgin Steele - I cannot wait for this set, i think they are gonna blow the roof off of Center Stage, unexpectedly. :kickass:
2.1) Jon Oliva. After JOP's set at Barfest i can't help but look forward to this a TON!!! What a performer and a great guy from what little i got to talkin with him. This and VS are close calls but considering this will be my first time getting to see VS......i have to give them the edge. But i think this JO set will be special and something to remember and i can't wait.
3) Sonata Arctica, Vanden Plas, Communic, Threshold, Firewind......all of these are about even on my list. Each for different reasons.
4) Redemption - Honestly i thought that they were going to be alot better than they were last time i saw them, and i was sort of dissapointed. Loved their disc, "The Fullness of Time" (have yet to pick up the other one).
5) After Forever and Raintime
6)Primal Fear and Cellador
7)Freak Kitchen, Primal Fear , and Krucible .......i had to be the only one who thought that FK's performance at PP VII was weak. Don't get me wrong they were slightly entertaining, and no doubt good musicians.....i just can't get into their music at all. :erk: As for Primal Fear and Krucible.....haven't really heard enough of their stuff to be excited about anything.

As for the BARfest T-Shirt Night.......what night do you guys wanna do it???
I think it would be cool if we all wore them on the same night.....it'd definitely be a great way to break the ice....."Hey, nice shirt!".....you know what i mean. It's coming up sooooo soon. I can't wait!!! :headbang::headbang::headbang:

I'll be there. This past year broke my streak of being at every single PPUSA (even the Chicago one), and I would've been there for that one 'cept my brother brilliantly picked THAT weekend to get married. <sigh> Oh well, looking forward to this year...'specially Andromeda and Raintime! Whoo-hoo!

Craig :headbang:

I have to agree with many on this one.. The lineup is pretty week for IX... as I had already decided at least years event... Although I would love to go to see regular attendents, it might be time to try a festival outside USA this year instead.

Cheers

It's an annual pilgrimage every year for me, no matter what the lineup is, it's still one of the premier festivals in the U.S. for this kind of music, well worth it every year, without exception, IMO.

I used to think that and well, last years fest I would have gone if I didn't have something else taking away my time and this years fest is the weakest by far out of the 9. I am not going and I gave up my gold badge rights after having it since PPUSA 1.0 as well, c'est la vie

The way I look at it, is times change, things change, music changes, people change...

I kinda feel the same, and this years line up is a bit weak, but I'll be there for the party!!:kickass::lol:

Last year's PPUSA was an awesome lineup, the best sets IMO from Pagan's Mind, Primal Fear, After Forever and Threshold, with some killer sets from Firewind, Communic, Redemptions and Freak Kitchen as well. While this year's lineup doesn't really have any of my favorite elite bands, there's still a lot of great music, leaning on the prog side such as Pathospray and Spheric Universe Experience and such, and as SharkBlack said, I'm going for the musical party as well! :kickass: Besides, I want to support this genre's success wherever and whenever I can, and that includes BARFEST as well! :headbang:

Wow . . .

Its weird, being part of the Progulus.com community has given
me a chance to hear ALOT of bands that get absolutely NO
exposure, except write ups in Prog and Metal mags, or my sheer
curiosity in blind purchases I've made most of my adult life.

A point was also made on a Blogger page by a listner in Munich:
"Why do people in common ignore bands from their own country?"
http://progrockin.blogspot.com/

. . . forgive me if I "sound" harsh (and I don't mean too at all),
some of the comments above sound like the equivalent of,
"I didn't see the opening act, I went outside to smoke".

Isn't this what the BARfest is trying to do too, to expose or re-expose
some bands that you may never heard of, or should hear and at-least
give a chance?

. . . I can't afford to go, not only would I enjoy most of the more
obscure bands, but could visit with a fellow Progulus Brother who
lives in Atlanta, and became a good friend through the sites live Chat
Board and emails, as have many others (and by the way, many Euro
listeners are "jealous" they can't make it).
Plus . . . REAL ATLANTA FOOD!!! Go to the lone "Yellow coloured"
Resturant at the edge of the Atlanta Braves parking lot! MY GOD!
ALOT of food for such a small price and you will know what Southern
cooking really is.

I'm scratching my head wondering how could a show with:
1. Amorphis
2. Iced Earth
3. Riverside
4. Andromeda
5. Spheric Universe Experience

NOT be a good show? :worship: some of these being rare jems
or "what are the chances of them coming stateside".
This is not "Cochella" or some Pop festival full of bands that get
tons of radio play and are pure CRAP . . . its Prog!
High Quality "MUSIC" with almost every Prog sub-genre'
represented :kickass:

I suggest seeking out these bands you don't know, hear some
samples (at their Sites, MYspace, Progulus or other sources) and
maybe you will be pleasantly surprised (but listen to a "few" songs
before judgement).
. . . Its a PROG show for God sakes! How could it be BAD unless
you threw in the "Strokes" in the middle of it :loco:

GET OUT THERE and support the Bands and the PrOg Community
and make them feel wanted and thank them for their contributions
to this Top 40 stagnant world!
PrOg On all :headbang:

. . . and don't hit me . . . OW!!! HEY~!!!

PrOg On all :headbang:

. . . and don't hit me . . . OW!!! HEY~!!!!

Its pretty simple for me really and trust me I know all the bands well. I have seen Amorphis live in San Francisco and they bored me to death, I have a few of their albums and its nothing that ever really grabbed me so that one is a no brainer and even if I went I wouldn't be watching them play for to long.

As for Iced Earth and Andromeda. I will further explain some reasons why they are not strong enough for me to go on their merits. Iced Earth, one of my old favorites. I loved them for a quite a few years and used to play them all the time on my radio show on Seismic Radio.com as well as many of the bands that make up the genre's that are Prog and Power. I have seen them twice now, once on tour with Everygrey and Children of Bodom and one when they went on tour with In Flames and Jag Panzer, both great shows.

The thing is I hung out with Jon for a few hours a few years ago when we he was special guest at PPUSA in his hotel room after friday night show and well his attitude and ego pretty much killed my good feelings towards him and the band. Its also the way he ripps through musicians that just does not sit well with me and its a personal choice completely. I could go on but I think you get my point.

As fro Andromeda, I really loved the first version of Extension of the Wish with Lawrence Mackrory on vox but when they re recorded wit with the new singer, I really didn't care for it or the second album. Great guitar playing though.

I think Spheric is a good up and coming band but not enough for me to go. I don't care for Pathosray, I tried to get into them, they really like a same old same old, been there done that before kind of band.

Riverside is good but same thing, they are to me pretty much a jam band, if you listen to their songs, it like they hit record and just jammed out which is cool but I can't listen for long periods of time to them, I have to be in a mood.

Now let me say, I worked on the PPUSA crew for Prog Power Usa 2.0 and know everyone on the crew and consider most good friends have also been a sponsor and friend of the fest since 1.0, so it really came down to a few things for me. One of which is I quit drinking, so I wouldn't just go for the party anymore like I have at a few of the past events and I have to really really have to be into the bands playing as I usually drop at least $1200.00 when I go. So its a money thing as well. The worst thing for me is not seeing my friends that I have made over the years, its a bummer but I am hoping some of them come out to BARfest. Anyways there are a few reason, not that I had to say anything, I felt compelled as everyone has reasons why everyone should go and others have valid reasons for not going. Ciao

Ahhhh . . .

Understandable Bear, about Iced Earth. Especially when you find out
"true" personalities. Been lucky to meet alot of personalities in Prog
and Metal, and have been lucky that they were all friendly, I even
heard stories of "The Professor" Neil Peart being VERY stand-offish
to his fans, but I got to meet him where I worked at Tower Records
in Santa Monica (I just kept my voice down), he was very pleasant
and we talked a bit about him (Neil) coming to LA to hear Geddy's
Solo album. :)

Again, didn't mean to knock on anyones decision, its just that a band
for example, like "Riverside" is VERY popular on Progulus, and alot of
us State-side may not be able to see them and would DIE to finally
bare witness to their music (Surprising number of people who enjoy
"melencolie music" on the station), As well as Iced Earth.
I guess you can chalk it up being a Yngwie fan, Love his music, but
if you have a Beer (or Wine in his case) with him . . . it'll just end in
a fight

I feel a bit irked about Daniel Gildenlow of Pain of Salvation, I hear
he is a bit arrogant himself (from a band Im friends with, who did a
festival with them, and said the band had an attitude-kind of
hypocriticle of them in how compassionate their lyrics are), and his
reasons for not touring in America . . . But, they make awesome
music, I'd see them in a heart beat, and it would show, "hey, you
got your opinions, welcome to the land of the free . . . you stink,
but your music kicks ass!" :p

I Totally AGREE with you about the Andromeda-1st issue! Though the
new singer is not a BAD singer at all, but I thought that Lawrence's
voice on the original, fit with the moods and topics of the songs, and
I'm a Darkane fan (as well as a Thrash/Death Metal fan).
Progulus listeners seem to split in 2 groups I'm told, but I only seem
to hear that they like the NEW version better.
So that brings up the point . . .
"One mans meat is another mans poison".

But to anyone else who "hasn't" heard most of the bands, go and
see them and support the cause (even if you don't drink, I don't),
and again, search out their music and take a listen.

But Bear . . .
I'm sure BAR will have a great list of Bands added to their roster, the
"3" already has me anxious to come back to my fave city (hopefully
move to the Bay Area sometime this year).

PrOg On all :headbang:

Extra Note:
Rick Pierpont and Fabio mention bands:
1. Threshold
2. Vanden Plas
3. Freak Kitchen
4. Redemption
5. Pagans Mind
6. After Forever
7. Communic

I don't see them at the ProgPowerUSA site, if these are the other bands . . .
now I REALLY feel bad I can't go
Does someone have the "Full Roster" link?
