maybe i can get some help here. i posted this on the megadeth forum and no one has really replied but most people on there are closed minded and think both of these bands are bon jovi/poison/motley crue styled hair metal. anyways heres the story:
me and my friends are having an argument and i'm hoping people on here can help end. there are a few magazines that call king's x the metal beatles and a few magazines that call saigon kick the metal beatles. this has now sparked a small disagreement over who really was the heavy metal beatles. please note neither of the bands are as good as the beatles. they are not as important as the beatles. the magazines and me and my friends are merely talking about the great harmonies and diverse songwriting and not actually comparing them to the greatness and importance of the beatles. here's some clips to help you deceide:
saigon kick:

My vote is for Kings X. I always felt that Gretchen was Abbey Roads 20 years later. Think of Dug as McCartney & Ty as Lennon on the vocal side.

Saigon Kick lost there lead singer after 2 albums so that is a strike againts them in my book. Very cool band though! Great songs.

Both bands desevered bigger success..............

They are metal. No, not in the intensity; vocally, nor do they write about the cliched style most metal bands are known for. There are other bands that are lighter in the guitar department that are considered metal, so....There are a few heavy songs on all but 2 Kings X albums.

Hmmmm people labelling bands "The new (insert name of older band here)" happens to be a pet hate of mine. To me, when a writer does it in a magazine, that is just lazy journalism, it doesn't do either band any favours. IMO it is better to just mention a band has been heavily influenced by an older band, than to call them say "The new Metallica" or whatever.

how could anyone classify king's x as heavy metal???

Ahhhhh... So damn tired of everyone with their pathetic, silly genre labeling. Who gives a shite if it you call it metal, prog, hard rock or whatever. If it's good it's good, if it's bad it's bad.
By the way, King's X is an awesome band, metal or not metal.

True! I'll talk about either band anytime, with fondness for both!

lord don't go on the megadeth forum then. my post there has turned into a both bands suck. both or crappy hair metal. neither one has talent. and then people name random bands who've played the sam style their whole career and have no vocal melodies and say they are the metal beatles. no one there even bothers to click on the links i provided as most people say "i've heard love is on the way and it's love so i know what they sound like"

anyways i voted saigon kick even though i own more king's x albums. i just thought they were more diverse

The biggest problem with the people that don't know either, is that they base those opinions on what the radio gave them! I stopped listening to radio back in 90'-91'. I got tired of even classic radio stations saying "we'll be back with some Yes, Kansas, and Rush". And what do they play despite the fact that these bands have 15-23 albums each? Always Dust in the Wind, Roundabout, Owner of a Lonely Heart, Tom Sawyer, Spirit of Radio. That's it? The songs that were released by KX were the worst on those albums! On radio from Kings x..
Gretchen Goes to Nebraska-Over My Head
Faith Hope Love-It's Love
Kings X-Black Flag
Dogman-Fool You
Saigon Kick-Come Take Me Now
The Lizard-Love Is On the Way
Water-I Love You
It's a shame, but poeple like us know how underrated these bands are, and I look foward to seein KX for the 4th time...hopefully soon. I saw Saigon Kick back in 94, here in Florida at Livestock 4. They sounded really good.

That's absolutely true, try Black Sabbath is either Paranoid or Iron Man. I stopped with radio around or before you do it. I only listen to my CDs now, don't need a DJ and a ton of ads to drive me by to the music I like. Oh, btw it seems Blue Oyster Cult only released one song in their entire career according to the radio '(don't fear) The Reaper' :Smug:

OOOOh! If we're lucky, sometimes maybe Godzilla! When I was wiring homes last year for an Electrician company, I had to deal with the guy I was partnered with, playing the radio, instead of cds I brought. But, I also wasn't going to expect him to listen to my stuff anyway. But I solved the problem after a few months by us both wearing our MP3 players while working. It was better for the both of us, and we could actually hear each other better as well! Instead of shouting/communicating over Black Dog, or We Will Rock You. Saigon Kick's Water album to me is their most Beatle sounding, by the way. Especially the song Sgt. Steve

thread back from the dead. i posted the song "hostile youth" on another forum and people were saying it sounds like straight glam. are you serious:OMG: they just want to put saigon kick into a genre they dislike so they can say they are a crap glam band

Hmm... I would go Saigon Kick simply for virtually anything on The Lizard. New TNT (Atlantis) reminds me A LOT of the beatles, especially the song Hello Hello.

In terms of vocal harmonies I think the most beatles sounding band may very well be Extreme. Yeah, there's the whole neo-classical-funk thing musically, but many harmonies are straight out of the beatles early cannon.

Also: Had grunge not swept everything away I've long thought that if hair metal had continued as the popular rock format, I think you'd have seen more bands who sounded like Saigon Kick or UKJ. SK were quite heavy and UKJ was a part of the whole funk metal thing that showed promise but never truly got off the ground (along with Faith No More, Extreme, etc.)

i agree. there was a bunch of great late 80's/early 90's bands that sorta mixed funk/hard rock or grunge/hair metal or whatever you want to call it but the movements died because of nirvana and pearl jam. great bands like kik tracee, animal bag, extreme, ugly kid joe, love/hate, saigon kick, king's x, etc. those bands were were the future of hard rock and were cut short

Don't know why this thread is back from the dead but imo neither band is a heavy metal beatles... don't know what band(s) would be but definetly not these two...

Well, not to mention the Chili Peppers have been popular for roughly 20 years.

them too. i forgot to mention bang tango. they were great but kinda screwed themselves over. when there was a bidding war for them to sign to a label they want MCA so they told the scout for a record company (i think it was epic or columbia) to get lost. a few years later that scout they told off was hired as one of the big wigs at MCA and the first thing he did was drop bang tango and fulfill their contract by releasing a live e.p. which became their highest charting release. talk about shooting yourself in the foot

oh yeah also circus of power was a good up and coming band
