Why do some websites make such a big deal about hotlinking?

Does it cost a lot of money in bandwidth when that shit happens, or are they just cheap bastards that jump at any chance to piss people off?

I almost always upload to photobucket.com or tinypic.com these days, but does one 40k image viewed 130 times on this forum REALLY suck up enough bandwidth to be noticeable?

I'm curious, because I like don't know and stuff.

They're just being cheap. It's not like they own the servers -- bandwidth issues would only affect the ISP, and I'm sure hotlinking is negligble.

Well the e-jerk thing still applies, what with Erik's example of replacing a 5k image with a 30k image. :p
