BROKEN GLASS!
Feds hit headshops and indict 55 pipe-sellers; Chong, Zong and Jerome Baker among targets.
by Mark Miller
Additional reporting by Steven Wishnia

WASHINGTON—Fifty-five people have been charged with conspiracy to sell drug paraphernalia following raids on pipe-selling businesses from Pennsylvania to California, Attorney General John Ashcroft and Acting DEA Administrator John B. Brown III announced on Monday, Feb. 24.

Among the targets were such glass-pipe giants as Jerome Baker Designs of Eugene, OR; the Zong bong and Seedless clothing companies in San Diego; Colorchangingglass.com, of Forestville, CA; and legendary pot comedian Tommy Chong, whose home was raided. Former HIGH TIMES staffer Randy Przekop, who now runs a headshop in Pittsburgh, was also indicted.

At a Justice Department press conference, Ashcroft stated that the indictments and raids are intended “to dismantle the illegal drug-paraphernalia industry by attacking their physical, financial, and Internet infrastructures.” The DEA and the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, in conjunction with the US Marshals, Secret Service, Customs Service, and Postal Inspection Service, spearheaded the investigation. Six US attorneys were also involved.

Although the operations primarily targeted businesses involved in manufacturing, distribution, and Internet sales, that were, several headshops across the US were also raided Feb. 24, including in western Pennsylvania and Fort Worth, Texas. Tommy Chong was not named in the indictment, but his Chong Glass company in Los Angeles was raided by federal agents, DEA agents, local police, K-9 units and postal inspectors. The former Cheech and Chong member’s Pacific Palisades, CA home was also raided.

“The whole industry’s in turmoil,” said a worker at one of the stores busted. “The people who didn’t get popped are bugging out just as bad as the ones who did. They don’t know if they can continue doing business.”

The Feds said they confiscated thousands of items of paraphernalia (primarily for pot use) in the raids. This included both “user-specific” products (pipes, bongs, etc.) and “dealer-specific” items (scales, baggies, etc.) The defendants face up to three years in prison, up to $250,000 in fines, and forfeiture of warehouses, machinery, and other property.

Several companies were raided without arrests being made, with alleged paraphernalia confiscated "wherever they had seizure warrants," according to DEA spokesperson Will Glaspy. More arrests are likely, he said, though he didn't know if Chong would be among them. The raids had been in the works for about a year and grew out of previous investigations of headshops in Iowa and Pennsylvania, he added. He said he didn't know how much they cost, but claimed "they were not very expensive from a manpower-resource standard."

Most of those charged were part of two separate coordinated operations. A federal grand jury in western Pennsylvania indicted 27 people as part of “Operation Pipe Dreams,” an investigation reaching from Pittsburgh to Phoenix to Southern California. The name was taken from the “G. W. Pipedreams” store in Clarion, PA, owned by the indicted Glen W. Beers.

if you want these drug policies to change go to norml.org and petition, w/o people who are sick of the fucked up laws in this country supporting the changing of the laws the drug laws wont be changed.

When being accused of a being a trafficker of Marijuana for - grams I was subject to police brutality including being beaten and choked. This was only the beginning, for - months after being first arrested I'd attended court - times while being on a curfew of -pm until my sentencing where i was then ordered community service and a year probation and for what - grams? I believe this injustice takes part all over the world and i just hope one day pot smokers around the world can enjoy the recreational use of canabis without having to constantly watch over their backs against the unjust laws imposed by our outdated and out of touch governments.

go Libertarians!!! No, seriously, people always bitch about not having a candidate, well actually we do. Anyone in the Libertarian party is what we want. Their basis for the party is Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. The only problem is people make up excuses not to vote. So....GET OFF YOUR ASS WHEN ELECIONS COME AND VOTE LIBERTARIAN. I am from Alabama and in our run for governor, our Libertarian candidate got - % of the votes. Now that sounds like a small number, but think about these things: No one that I know voted. The only people that really voted were the old people (the ones that are HOPELESSLY brainwashed). I don't think there has EVER been a libertarian candidate (although i could be wrong). And also consider this is Alabama. Enough said. So what I'm getting at, is that if every one of us gets out and votes, especially the more liberal areas of the US like Cali and NY, then there is no telling what we could do. All I know is people need to stop making excuses for not trying. If you don't do anything, you can bet that nothing will happen.

The problem with the vote is well-known to California and a few other states, where the majority voted in favor of medical marijauna. The majority also voted for an end to mandatory-minimums in most of the counties and districts of Mass., but the 'Feds' don't recognize those votes and continue to insist that the federal law still makes all people subject to federal law, which is prevented from changing by extremely powerful capitalist pigs who control the most powerful political offices. The fact is, most Americans are presently in favor of medicinal marijauna, but the politicians that are voted into office are subject to the fascist pressure of corporate pigs who fear that legal marijauna will reduce their profits. Greed has killed the power of the democratic vote, as much as I hate to admit it.

Smoke more pot. Go Canada, go Britan,Go Jamaca, GO GO GO AMSTERDAM! Reverand Joint Smoker sez back 'em down if ya got 'em. More hash too. Big kudos to hash producers. It's all about control in this worthless state of government, they have to control every aspect of human life. I piss in their mouth.:Spin:

So why aren't we spending this money on, say, education or humanitarian aid or something like that?

Oh yes - because marijuana is EVIL. It makes you run over kids and get knocked up at 14, and gives money to evil drugs lords. Well, more like aging hippies in Northern California - but they're just as EVIL!!

I have a few theories why pot is illegal. When they wrote the drug laws, all unncontrolled substances were lumped together. In order to decriminalize pot, they would have to decriminalize ALL the drugs that are lumped into the drug laws. Also, the war on drugs? That is big money, for government law enforcement. Seizing properties.

Also, HEMP can & should replace cotton, paper & lumber for building materials.
It is an ecologically sound crop-fully renewable needs far less pesticides & chemicals to create clothing, paper, food & building materials.

Lumber cotton & paper is big business in america. SPECIAL INTERESTS do not want hemp to be legal.

IF the goverment decriminalized pot & marketed it & taxed it like liquor, AND applied the same laws to pot as liquor, we as a country (america) could wipe out alot of our debt. Do I think kids should drink? no. Do I think kids should smoke pot? no.
But as an adult I am offended by the anti drug laws.

Do I think pot is as bad as coke or heroin or crack or even booze?
HELL no.

I told my son, if you are going to alter yourself I would rather you smoke pot than do anything else.

Booze is a chemical, as are all other drugs.
The only thing you need to do to pot is put a flame to it.
I think booze does more harm than pot-as do cigarettes.

WHEW.

*Steps down off soap box*

Wow, I dunno what got into me there. Sorry eh?

*Takes another breath*

And oh hey, let me add how happy it makes me that we parole rapists, violent criminals & pedophiles early to make room in jails for those terrible pot smokers, growers & dealers.

Now really, I am done.

I was watching the Montel Williams show and he had 2 femaile guests that were sent to prison for 25 years with possession of about a lines worth of coke. Sent to jail at the age of 19. Was released 10 years later for good behavior.

-IMO she should have never had went to jail in the first place.

He also had some other female who was molested by a male family member for years. He got 5 years in jail.

-IMO he should had went to jail for LIFE

WTF is wrong with this world today?

Depends on the state you're in. The state of Washington has the Green Cross! Yippee! Anyway, it is used (marijauna) for uncontrollable pain, and finding the doctor that will prescribe is your only problem. And having a damn good reason to need it too. IT is classified as having no medicinal uses, but some states have softened their stance on it, and do use it for glaucoma and for pain managament. In wash., if you have your script, you can grow enough plants to supply yourself with your "script". You're the pharmacist. And the Green Cross will help you get set up with the lights, seeds, growing room set up, etc. All states are governed by federal law. So, technically, no matter what the state laws are, the feds can come in and wipe you out, put you in jail, and bankrupt you.

Now, what I want to try is the synthetic marijuana, marinol. Yes. I hear it is as powerful as LSD and you may hallucinate. I don't want to hallucinate, only try like a 1/4 a tab and see what it's like and if it really does kill pain.

It used to be like ten years ago in Alaska where you could grow 4 plants per adult in the household. No one bothered anyone. Now, those from Alaska have grown the best strains I have ever had. But when it came to voting day, the law was repealed. I suspect it's because everyone was home stoned.

I feel that pot should be decriminalized, and too much money is wasted on prosecuting and jailing those that are in possession, or growing, or smoking it. I have known pot smokers (Smot Pokers) all my life, and never met anyone who did ONLY pot who was a problem. Mixing drugs has different results, but that's another story.

I don't even smoke anymore! I just feel strongly about it.

Technically, the US is not a democracy. It's a democratic republic, emphasis on the republic? What's this mean? Well, given the passing of recent laws and the intense arguments and turmoil over various events and decisions by the government as a whole, that the whole concept of every citizen having a voice is not entirely true. We elect our representatives, the Senate and the House of Reps, and they in theory represent what the majority of persons want.

In a true democracy, there are no representatives. The populace would vote on laws and the general running of the state. Of course, that'd mean laws would take forever to pass. And frankly, given how stupid so many people are, one wonders how long it would be before things fell apart.

Just something I was contemplating when considering the drug laws. Judging by the statistics, the populace would agree for the legalization of pot, if not a few more drugs. But the government, which is supposed to fairly represent us, seems to feel otherwise. Ever wonder what things would be like if they decided to ignore the populace as a whole?

Yes there is a green cross in washington state.

BUT the grow ops that they set up keep getting shut down.

They are watched closely & have so many rules to follow that just one little slip & they get shut down.

I have a friend who has a green cross liscense, he can legally have up to an ounce of pot(He is HIV+)
He tried marinol, & told me it had very little effect.
Not nearly the healing powers of good green maryjane.
3 times now, the grow op where he could fill his prescription has been shut down.
I mean cmon, it is a plant for chrissakes.
*shakes head*

Marinol works as a pain killer.

But smoking pot has other beneficial effects that marinol does not provide like preventing nausea, promoting an appetite.

My friend gets SO sick from his meds, he can't eat unless he smokes pot & good nutrition is important when you are on the cocktail for HIV.
