"Anthems" is better

disagree, but im not too into either one really. they have a few great classic songs but id put them toward the bottom of the pile of norwegian bands of that era. i prefer Mayhem, Burzum, Satyricon, Ulver, Arcturus, In The Woods, etc...but maybe that's pretty obvious? i dont usually see emperor mentioned at the top of the lists of more 'strict' black metal listeners? (not that Arcturus and In The Woods are black metal in the stricter sense either)

blah blah i guess im saying emperor is somewhat mediocre with a few great songs. or something.

I rank Anthems as one of my top ten albums of the 90s, possibly ever. And In the Nightside just below that. It (nightside) was one of the first albums I heard from the Norwegian scene and a landmark album for me

nightside is easily like top 5 norwegian albums ever

so it's just you

Yeah "Inno a Satana" and "I am the Black Wizards" are pure gems, my issue is: all the other songs on the album have always bored me to some extent, when, clearly, they should not because it’s fucking Emperor and these songs pretty much define some later music I enjoy without reserve, including Anthems…, which to me is unequalled and just not of this world.

Never mind.

i don't think inno a satana is even close to being the best on the album

these are, and also "i am the black wizards" although that one is a bit worn out for me at this point

whenever the first snow falls i always play this album, "into the infinity of thoughts" never fails to GET to me, this is one of the truly transcendent works of black metal, one of The Albums together with "hvis lyset tar oss", "transilvanian hunger", "de mysteriis" and so forth

that we're even really having this discussion is pretty absurd to me but oh well

it might well have to do partially with this being one of the first bm albums i ever owned

even so, i'm sure it's objectively good

it's just you
It would apear so. that's why i was phrasing it as a question, i feel i haven't seen as much praise for them around here or in general as a lot of their peers get, maybe i wasn't paying attention. The songs mentioned/posted are their standouts for me as well.
