Glenn my good sir, you are 100% correct! I was hoping you'd take part in this discussion. Now, i'm not going to claim i am a big prog fan (though get me some good ol' gamma ray or angra and you have yourself one happy metal fan). However, though i despise them with every bone in my body, i can at least *see* how Dream Theater is influential. I'm just using that as an example, so from here on out fuck dream theater, they aren't a part of this conversation.
The thing is, and this is just my view (feel free to try to change my mind), that very few so-called "prog" bands really do anything worth shit these days. I've got 4 discs from Sensory in the last few months, being Circus Maximus (Symphony X rip off, though quite good at what they do, especially since i am a fan of Symphony X), Redemption, Zero Hour, and Stride. Redemption has been absolutely PAINFUL, and i just can't get through it. Zero Hour hasn't hit my cd player yet, but from all the great things i hear from fans of this band, i have expectations. The problem is, it was the same story with Stride.
So again, I will ask in a less insulting way: What is the appeal here? Is it the technicallity? If i want technicallity without passion, i'll go for spiral architect. Is it passion? If so, am i missing the point? What is passionate about this band? Seriously, think about this before anyone responds. Again, i admit i am an outsider here (who doesn't capitalize his "I's"). I'm sure many of you feel the same about my choices in Metal (everything from God Dethroned to Dimmu Borgir to Hammerfall to Nevermore... ahhh Hammerfall *snuggles up to gigantic, phallicly symbolic hammer*).
So there we have it. Before i listen again and give a review, tell me: What am i listening for. What will make me "get it"?
And i am a guy, so unless their keyboardist is a hot, big breasted blonde, i am afraid that won't do it for me
