It would be the best if opeth played all of their mellow material, then for the last song followed it all up with Demon of the Fall. They mustn't break tradition!
I'm thinking that they should start up a NEW tradition, where they play To Bid You Farewell as an encore for any 'mellow' sets they play... I'd say that would be somehow appropriate, wouldn't you?
It's the all 'clean' version of Opeth. Opeth doing what they do best, and better than anyone else!
Better than everyone else eh?
Actually, I think you'll find that, when you don't
specialise in something, you won't be as good as the bands that do
And as far as 'best' goes, as in most things, darkness is simply that abscence of light. I think that you'll find that one can't truly exist without the other, and that they must coexist for either to have any meaning. As I've said before, if Opeth had never struck a power chord in it's life until now, I don't think you'd find yourself listening to them now, and like wise if they'd stuck to their 'pure' black metal roots.
And while the only genre of metal on that I dislike on general principle is Black Metal (With a few notable exceptions of course), I still wouldn't be surpised if, assuming Opeth decide to go ahead and make it, that their next 'black metal album' would still be a kick arse venture worthy of a purchase.
And this is NOT because I'm an Opeth fan-boy, this is because, as with Damnation, I would expect the new album to have that distinct yet almost undefineable 'Opeth Flavour', which brings me back release after release to listen to their stuff.
I agree with you. I wish Opeth would continue to make more material like Damnation. Or Mikael should at least form a side band or something.
Oh, and while I'd certainly appreciate more music along the Damnation vein from Opeth, I wouldn't want them to concentrate TOO much on that style of music, as they would inevitablly suck all the good acoustic sections and riffs out of their 'normal' stuff, which would just plain suck.
So as I'd mentioned before, I'd think that a part-time side-project would be the best way to go about it.
Shiering corpse is closest to the reason why an Opeth/PT tour would rock the most.... that and the fact that thier current styles of music obviouslt compliment one another nicely.
