That's the way it's written in English english. 
It was an American idea to drop the other L, but most European dictionarys spell it with two L's. Makes sense seeing that Niklas and Mikael were really big on English romanticist literature at the time the band was formed.

it's old-fashioned british english. in their early years dark tranquillity were all for old-fashioned british english. their earliest demo featured a cover-song called "god punish the queen", but they never released it due to "coppy-righte" problems.

i just noticed/registered the two ls recently, even though ive been into the band for years. i was amused. and i probably have had the misspelled name go into print a couple times in a few music articles i wrote. our american spell check would insist on it too.

Wait, are you telling me that languages change over the years? This just in, Spanish, French and Italian all started out as Latin. They changed over the years to become different languages.
