why you do this .

Well anyone who is playing music for the money is doing it for the wrong reasons IMO. That guy sure paints a grim picture of the situation though...

On a side note, I saw Last Chance to Reason about a month ago and there were quite a few people there so things can't be all too bad for them.

yeah, i don't think anyone is in this for the money (at least big money)

but loosing money, that's a bummer. But then again bands are too desperate to play shows, any shows, oversaturate the market which leads to low attendance...

It's happening even here, where you have 2-3 shows every weekend, and most of them are beginner bands who've just released a demo or ep, and usually they don't play music that is really interesting. And who is that mental to constantly attend these shows and hear this crap ? Not me.

I'd rather organise/play/watch less shows, but make sure they are of better quality overall

Just my 0.02

Jup,

With my stoner band we dont even play half of all the overs we get for this reason.

The good bands that do well minimize their amount of gigs to make it more exclusive, thus having more crowd....

totally agree. i've been in this punk band since 2009 and we play the same local places over and over. This Friday we will have played 4 weekends in a row. That's too fucking much. I think I've made at most $20 in two years, we always play to raise money for the touring band(s). But imagine playing to the SAME 10 people every time you play. haha. Sometimes it's a lot of fun, but sometimes I would rather stay home.

I don't have anything against those that do play for money either. Playing live music is a skill, even though everyone seems to think otherwise. I've played in bar bands since I was about 18 and it does feel good to get some cash after busting your ass all night. The catch is that I'm playing classic rock and I'm a huge classic rock fan anyway, so it's not like I'm playing something I hate for cash (most of the time). I made a living for two years from just playing bars all the time and I would like to do it again since I can't seem to get a 'real job' anywhere.

That video was pretty awesome.

Sleeping in hotel rooms?
Only KINGS do such a thing..

I remember a tour where we lost our trailer, had to buy a new one because no one would rent us one... out of 15 shows, got paid 5 times (guarantee was $150, got that once..), rarely had a place to stay, gas was up to $1.40 per liter ($5.31 per gallon) x 9000km+ round trip
Ended up about $8000+ in debt for that one.
Good times.

I tell you the truth :
I played shows with 5 to 20 people, I don't say I din't play shows with hundreds of people, I did, but I even played in front of nobody basically.... just the other bands' members and club owner lol no crowd
why I quit? guess it..
better recording than playing stupid shows, it's important to book really good shows, quality vs quantity!
