The problem generally is songwriting and vocals. Chainheart and some of APP had excellent guitar ideas and are definitely good compared to similar bands. NBC is just totally focused on choruses songwriting-wise to the point where they almost stop the entire songs just to cram a little pop in there. It's just upbeat to the point where there's no passion there at all. Most people don't like aggression in metal at all though unless it's presented in tiny little bits so I guess I can see how Gothenburg is so popular. I just don't see why those fans just don't go for real pop instead I guess.
As for a thrash revival, it's pretty much impossible. What people define as thrash now is pretty much anything even remotely aggressive that isn't Death Metal. I think Pantera and Machine Head killed all possibilities of decent metal music outside extreme metal unless we're talking rare breeds like Nevermore that actually makes the modern stuff work.
Will it matter if they return to form? It seems like nowadays even when bands really do go back to their old and better style, the fans still hate it even though they begged for it.
I fail to see how Soilwork was so bad when what they were doing was really good but was horribly copied by inferior bands who made it bigger than they did in the end.
That's a good point and there's some truth to your words. I used the American example because there was this giant explosion (or implosion, rather) of new American metal that was in all actuality fucking horrendous, yet somehow it flourished. I fail to see how Soilwork was so bad when what they were doing was really good but was horribly copied by inferior bands who made it bigger than they did in the end.
Like Soilwork didn't just totally blow up on what bands like At The Gates, late Carcass, In Flames and Dark Tranquility pioneered... right...
Without the success of In Flames and the subsequent melodeath hype, bands like Soilwork or Insomnium etc. would have never ever reached the status they got and probably wouldn't even sound like they do.
Saying a band like KSE is a bad copycat when speaking about fucking Soilwork is like a bad joke. I can't take that serious.. sorry.
It seems like the only interestingly original thing to come out of the states in the past five years is Warrel's solo album. It's all either hypertech death metal, the likes of which Nile would pulverize into dust, uber-underground black pagan metal that sucks in comparison to the really awesome black pagan bands (which is another case of hero-worship), or screamo-emo-core/melodeath wannabe bands.
Honestly, what has the US given to us in the last five years that's truly original? You could say they've started the much-needed thrash revival, but it's a revival and basically a giant homage being paid to its former glory. I love it, don't get me wrong, but it seems like all these American metal bands of all genres were absent the day innovation was being handed out.
THIS JUST IN:
Soilwork has always sucked. More on this at 11!
And both of you listen to really shitty generic black metal sosaw Soilwork in 2003 or something. even my 16 year old music tastes thought it sounded too gay.

No shit... that's actually a pretty ridiculous thing to say... no good metal has come from the US in 5 years.
LOL.
