Wichers back in Soilwork

shitty generic black metal? I pretty much never listen to black metal. Try again mr. cant-post-past-me-despite-my-two-week-abscence-from-UM

I don't listen to generic anything. except generic old school death, because old school DM kicks ass.

DM/BM, if it's generic as fuck it still sucks  Same goes for any type of music. Also, I haven't been around much either Stefan.

gonna have to say that plenty of brilliant metal has come out of the states in the last 5-10 years. wolves in the throne room, leviathan, xasthur, nachtmystium, absu (tara is from 2001, take it or leave it), weakling, ahab, asunder, etc etc. the list goes on and on. you have to dig for it.

I'll give you WITTR, although not so original, they did something great. Leviathan has been around for a LOOOOONG time; ABSU??? Dude, he's been around FOR-E-VER. Nachtmystium is a good band as well as Xasthur, but they aren't exactly treading in unchartered territory.

Because soilwork were/are 100% original, right?

They're pretty original for what they were doing during Chainheart and Predator's Portrait. It's still in the same vein as the other melodeath bands, but the difference is that they really were one of the originals.

Lumping them in with all the other copycats is like saying Metallica copied Slayer because there was more than one thrash band in the 80's.

shitload of euro metal sucks too.

Oh god there are infinitely sucktastic bands across the pond, but they aren't on the front cover of music/guitar magazines every month and on MTV every day.

My point being that the American bands in the last five years who have ripped everything off from bands like ATG, Carcass, Soilwork, In Flames, DT, etc., have not only ripped them off, but they've dumbed down the genre while the sheeple have eaten it up like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

One of the originals?

At the Gates - The Red in the Sky Is Ours 1992
Carcass - Heartwork 1993
Dark Tranquillity - Skydancer 1993
Eucharist - A Velvet Creation 1993
Edge of Sanity - The Spectral sorrows 1993
etc. etc.

...
Soilwork - Steelbath Suicide 1998

Dude, Carcass was like the bridgehead into melodeath; melodeath didn't exist back then...they were like a conduit in which other bands could follow suit. Soilwork were one of the bands who took some of the things and ideas that Carcass started and expanded upon that, along with the others. In Flames, Soilwork, and Dark Tranquillity are a far cry from the crap shat out of the anus of popular modern metal today. WERE a far cry, I should say. Now I guess they think that people actually like bland, boring, uninspired music so it seems like they've been copying the copycats.

Max, all I'm saying is that the bastardization that the melodeath bands of the mid to late 90's did to the early aforementioned DM bands wasn't nearly as horrible and vapid as what a band like Chimaira has done to the melodeath scene.

One of many bands that had been doing it for 5 years or more before soilwork released their first full length? doesn't sound too original to me. More like jumping on a trend 5 years late.

K, so they didn't destroy the scene as much as newer american bands. That makes them no better nor original.

Neither is just about every other single band on the planet that has a record deal. Black metal, death metal, power metal, thrash metal...dude, METAL is not original. Just by its nature it can't be original because it takes from so many different genres. What comes out can sometimes be somewhat original, but then that will be copied sooner or later, as we have seen.

And that DOES make them better for not destroying a scene.

Soilwork added catchy and downright poppy melodies and that wasn't so popular in DM at the time. I'd say they were original in that respect, but not an overall original band.

But then again, Colony had some catchy melodies as well.

That's cool, that's your opinion. I'd be inclined to disagree, but that's just me.

I'm still waiting on Kevin's response to give me a single truly innovative, original (although it's difficult to be truly original in metal) and awesome debut from an American metal band in the last five years besides Warrel Dane. Not because I'm trying to prove him wrong or anything, but I really want to know because maybe he could change my mind. Maybe I've missed out on something.

Circa 1997, the scene is a cold dreary winter day in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Melodeath band member #1: Hey I have an idea! Lets keep our melodies, but make them way more gay, and then take out all the balls in our music!
Melodeath band member #2: Awesome!
*some time later*
Melodeath band member #2: Okay, we've released an album full of happy, estrogen-filled tunes that my girlfriend just loves! What do we do next?
Melodeath band member #1: Profit!
