Hg is the chemical symbol for Mercury. Mercury was the Roman messenger-god, as well as the closest planet to our sun. From this we can clearly deduce that :.:: is a 6 on its side.

btw when do you say Mercury and when quicksilver? In German there is only one word for it which is pretty similar to "quicksilver" <-> "Quecksilber".

Well, Mercury is the "official" name for it, I suppose. If you look at a periodic table in any English textbook, it will say Mercury rather than quicksilver. Quicksilver isn't exactly slang, but it's much less common. I think of it as more of a nickname really, though whether I'm right in this I don't really know, that's just how I perceive it.
