I know maybe a noob question, but I've never known what the line in on an interface is for. What are it's uses? I've always used instrument ins.

Instrument in and line in are the same thing.....there's line in and theres mic in

Hmmm... that's a little misleading. An "instrument in" as you say, would be a hi-z input... a specific input for low impedance levels like guitars and bass. That is very different a line level signal, which is what a line in is for.

Indeed, there is. That's why when you plug your guitar into your line-in, and use an amp sim, most of the time, you just get a noisy assfaced signal.

Yup, line-in's are for plugging external preamps into (whether they be external mic or guitar preamps)

Really depends on the interface, some still go through the preamps with no gain (but can get coloured), some hit buffers, etc.... Line-In = Line Level Signal Input. If the output on your Preamp is Line Level, then you should good to try it.

Line in is meant for low impedance (usually around 600ohm) inputs like keyboards, di-boxes and cd-players, when for example a passive guitar has 15 000 ohm output and active guitar has like 200 0000 ohm output or so, so they are high impedance sources.
