New to posting, but been reading quite a bit.. Need some recommendations for some new bands, be cool if you could help.

I like Euro power metal like Helloween, Blind Guardian, Hammerfall, Edguy, Rhapsody, etc.

Also, Melodic Death Metal such as Children of Bodom & Kalmah

thanks

For Euro power metal try Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica. Also try Kamelot, theyr american but theyr pretty good. As for good melodic death Opeth is a must. Besides that theres earlier In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates, Amon Amarth

Children of Bodom aren't even 'melodic death metal' in the watered down 'gothenburg' sense.

I'd like to find some power metal bands as good as Helstar.

Along with GoD's Helstar reccomendation (get Nosferatu) try:

Jag Panzer - Ample Destruction
Fates Warning - Awaken The Guardian

Hmm, not too sure about the Black Dahlia Murder recommendation, Id say they're more metalcore along the lines of Lamb of God, but each to their own.

Melodic death -

Garden of Shadows
The Duskfall
Dawnbringer
Darkane
Farmakon
Ensiferum
Omnium Gatherum
Sins of Omission
Vehemence
Skyfire (similar to Children of Bodom, so more power metally than melodic death)
Soul Demise

I agree with all three of them. Well, personally, I wouldn´t consider Fates Warning a power metal band, but how you label a band or the music they play is absolutely irrelevant, because the only thing that really matters is whether you like the music or not.

Just a few more recommendations (whether you call it power metal or what the heck else):
Vicious Rumors - "Soldiers Of The Night" and "Digital Dictator"
Power - "Justice Of Fire"
Powermad - "Absolute Power"
Metal Church - "Metal Church"
Nightwish - "Oceanborn"
(if you like the latter, you might also like: Soulslide - "Dreamshade")

Actually, "The Spectre Within" was the first Fates Warning album I bought in 1985 and I still think that "The Apparition" and "Epitaph" are two of their best songs ever. "The Spectre Within" and "Awaken The Guardian" are definitely epic, yet I never regarded them as power metal (e.g. as opposed to the two Vicious Rumors albums I mentioned), but rather as progressive metal. However, how you label an album or a band has no effect on the music itself - it still remains the same. The find out whether you like an album or not you will have to listen to it for yourself. Genre labels might help to give you a rough idea, but since there is good and bad music in (nearly?) any genre, such a label is never a sign of quality in itself.

BTW, I disagree that Fates Warning started profusely sucking after 1988. While I was disappointed with "Parallels" and "Inside Out", "Perfect Symmetry" is one of my favourite Fates Warning albums - but that´s just another opinion.
