Interesting...
Just to be clear, I'm not talking about commercial success. I mean more along the general lines of
KEA/RTL/MOP (and AJFA for most people)>black album/new one>Load/Reload>St Anger

People love to talk 'Tallica.

I think the Black Album has perhaps just been so overly played that people cringe to hear it now. Enter Sandman is fucking awesome, but I can barely listen to it now. It's one of those riffs. It's iconic and ingrained into the psyche, but that makes it so familiar that you don't want to hear it anymore.

Personally I liked Ride the most, it mixed all the elements they possessed to their greatest height.

You, sir, hit the nail on the head.

The black album is a phenomenal metal achievement; it signalled a time when the riffs supported the song and not vice versa. People can say all they want about Bob Rock, but to my ears, production doesn't get any better than the Black Album for metal. The pity of it all is, like you said, that it has been shoved down our throats for so long that everyone is sick of it. There were some really really kickass songs on that album like The Struggle Within. It's just that we've heard "derrrrr, ner neer ner ner...derrrr ner neer ner ner" so many times that we immediately shun it because we're sick of it.

That was also the pinnacle of Hetfield's voice and coined the jokes of "EEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!" at the end of every syllable because he did it so well.

I think if a new band was trying to break into the industry with the last few Metallica albums, said band would still be living with their parents. I really have lost faith in Metallica. They have sounded so forced and generic for a decade.
