Your favorite mic for clean vocals?

I use a Peluso 2247LE (2500$) it is awesome. Can be a bit harsh on some baritone voices, but i just recently bought a 1176 and what a great combo. Makes it smooth as hell :D

Check out Peluso P12, seems to have great reputation and is a bit cheaper.

If you don't want to go over a couple hundred bucks, then an MXL CR-24 would probably be right up your alley. It's the newer, shinier version of the 2003A which has been getting rave reviews for years for being one of the best value budget mics out there.

Thank you wisheraser!
The only mic I have at the moment is an MXL 990, which was around $50 when I bought it. I know it's incredibly noobish of me, but well, that's why I'm asking for suggestions for when I start building my collection. :)

Anyways, the 990 is absolutely awesome for the price I got it. I mean, it's clearly not the best, but I was so satisfied when I got it because I was sure I'd have to spend like $500 at LEAST to get anything with some sort of pro-sounding quality.

So, I'm partial to MXL for being great for the price. :)

Hey, not to threadjack, but that seems within the budget I'm looking for for a mic. I need something that will be good with a very LOUD high-ish pitched singer - if I had to say his voice was closest to anyone, it would be Rody Walker from Protest the Hero... do you think this would do the job?

No prob. It's too bad you didn't make this thread a little sooner, because Musician's Friend was running a "stupid deal of the day" on a CR-24 + SDC pack for $60 a couple weeks ago. I'm kicking myself for not jumping in on that (even though I already have a 2003A on the way), cause that is a ridiculous price to performance ratio. Now it's back up to $160 I think. That's still a pretty damn good deal for 2 mics though.

Possibly. There's really no way to know for sure without trying. That said, this sounds like a singer who would be a perfect match for a SM7B or a RE20, although both of those mics are unfortunately more than twice the price of the CR-24.

Damn, I looked up the SM7B, and it does seem like something that would fit. In a lot of music we see today, people are able to make the vocalist sound much better than they do in real life... I just want to make sure we can record our vocalist well enough that he sounds as good on the recording as he does in real life. Some of our previous tries just can't quite capture the power... though here's something pretty decent we did on a pretty cheap MXL (I don't know exactly what, our old keyboardist did this recording)

If it really comes to it, maybe we'll just do the instrumentals in my basement studio, and then find a more professional studio to handle the vocals in.

This is the kind of thing that COMPLETELY depends on the singer's voice.

I've had the most success with the Mojave MA200, Soundeluxe U99, Shure SM7B, and AKG C414TLII.

I hate the U87. Sorry! Can't stand it.

Aw man, that would have been nice to get.

I'm also getting the SM7b for the screamed vocals. I haven't really thought twice about it--I've seen it in so many studio update videos with some of my favorite bands that were using the sm7b.

When I get the money, I might also buy the AT4040 since you guys seem to like it as well. There's no harm in having a nice collection, right?

Again, thanks for all the help. :D
