THE OFFICIAL DREAM THEATER DISCUSSION THREAD

Awake is much more mature-sounding to me than Images & Words ever was. The latter, while undeniably a great record, had somewhat of a cheesy, 80's feel to it. Awake was darker, tighter, more synchronized, better structured... in general, it felt less cluttered overall. The band sounded more like...

    New Megadeth Song

Where are the backing vocals coming from?!

A couple of questions about The Odyssey (guitar)

Good lord what happened to Lepond!?

    Dream Theater in the studio

I agree completely! I liked Octavarium when it came out, but instead of growing on me, I lost interest (the only tracks I can still stomach are Octavarium and Panic Attack). Train of Thought is my favorite DT release...there's so much energy!

A couple of questions about The Odyssey (guitar)

I love that part because the bass doubles every note of the guitar.

    inferno video

If that's the one from the Gigantour DVD, yes, it is awesome. And yes, they are awesome on stage! I love DT, but they stand around like robots...Symphony X has stage presence (particularly Allen and Lepond).

    Adagio

Ha! That's orgasmic! And I thought John Myung was good... @ SilentRealm - If you get the chance, sure! But it's not that big of a deal, so only if you want.

Does anyone else thinks S X is scary?

I don't think Symphony X or Opeth are "scary." They are both extremely dark (particularly Opeth), but scary is more like black metal to me.

    The men of Symphony X

Yeah, that's one hell of a killer solo section! The bass is in 5/4, and when the drums finally kick into a groove after the drum solo, they subdivide the 5/4 into 6/8, 4/8. It also changes keys a full step up halfway through the guitar solo. It's one of my favorite complex Symphony X sections.

    Adagio

I took an hour and figured out the bass for R'lyeh the Dead...if anyone wants it, ask me! Can anyone help with the bass fill @ 1:21 in Children of the Dead Lake?

    Adagio

I'm glad MrFast resurrected this thread, because I just got into Adagio! I've only listened to Sanctus Ignis and Underworld once, and while I like them, I think Dominate is their best work. It's like a perfect mix of Symphony X and Opeth! I can't stop listening to Children of the Dead Lake...

    The men of Symphony X

Lepond's tone adds so much to the mix, with the high mids. His playing style reminds me of Steve Harris sometimes, when he plays chords (Lepond sounds like he's flicking them with the nail-side of his right hand fingers). And yes, he shreds. I consider the whole second disc of the live album...

    The men of Symphony X

I love the improvised part in the middle of the second verse. So awesome!

    The men of Symphony X

Or they should just buy the live album and, you know, not kill themselves. :Smug:
