If you like the recent Soilwork stuff, check out Darkane. Also check out
Devin Townsend's various projects, which range from fairly mellow (Ocean
Machine and Terria) to pretty aggro (Strapping Young Lad). Other good
bands in line with what you've mentioned are The Haunted, Dark Tranquility,
At The Gates, Children of Bodom, and Norther.

If you're looking for stuff on the more progressive side, but still with
some aggression, try And Eternity and Wolverine. They're both on DVS
Records, which is the newish label from the guy who runs ProgPower. Both
bands mix death influences with prog, albeit in pretty different
directions. Shadowdance isn't bad, either, and is in the same vein, but
may be pretty hard to find if you don't have a local store that specializes
in prog metal.

If you want more in the power metal vein (you mentioned Blind Guardian),
check out Symphorce and Brainstorm, both fronted by Andy B. Franck, ex- of
Ivanhoe. Brainstorm's thrashier, and Symphorce is a little more melodic.
Also, kind of in a class of their own, there's Nevermore, which mixes
thrash, power metal, and (almost over the top) melodramatics, and comes out
with a really tasty combination. As far as other intelligent thrash goes,
I like Grave Digger and White Skull lots...they have a good mix of really
heavy parts and anthemic melodic bits.
