8-core hackintosh

that's some great info!
i still do not get the performance thing...

i just closed a project that maxed out my current pc because i have a
ton of plugins and samplers running. i just can't imagine that this project would not also max out my pc if i had OSX installed.

the lower cost is surely a benefit, no doubt about that.

cheers

Although the OSX has a better memory footprint than windows, this isn't actually an example of performance - you're simply hitting the limits of your hardware (specifically RAM, and possibly CPU) and the same thing would probably happen if you were using OSX... But the real question is how good did it work until you hit that limit, and I can guarantee this:
- when the system is under that much load try starting another program or two, try loading another project, or even opening a web page in web browser, and see which system gets you there faster...
As I've said earlier, the system is much more RESPONSIVE and it's a joy to work with.

Hey mate i already have an i7 imac but its the original with the 2.6 and its starting to get bogged down + i cant install an additional SSD to this which is what i wanted to do.

so now i want to build a 8 core thats fully working and stable from the ground up. plus its more rewarding if you ask me :)

Then definitely go and check out Tonymac's site, it's got ton of useful info and step-by-step tutorials... It's a good thing you haven't already bought the components because on that site you will find what hardware works best before you cash out (I know that Tony recommends Gigabyte's motherboards... I bought one and never had any problem with it... and I have this Hackintosh for a year and half now :) )

The whole system is:
- more reliable and stable (no viruses, no hangups, no freezes, no crashes... software will never give you popup dialogs with exclamation marks, warnings of incompatibility, errors, etc...).
- much faster and responsive (multithreading much more optimized).
- no need for maintenance because it doesn't get messed up and slow after a while like window does.
- the workflow is much more intuitive and easier (this could actually subjective and a matter of preference).

honestly i never had any serious problem with W7 as i
always buy hi-quality parts and keep my system drive "tidied up"
and as clean as possible. i do a new installation about every six months though.

still a hackintosh system seems to be very tempting!

i just ordered a new PC, i think i may try this given that the
hardware is compatible. a dual boot system would be interesting.

cheers

PS: sorry for hijacking the thread, i'll stay out as from now

is yours an 8 core mate?

i've been using the Kakewalk forums as XeS advised and they're brill....

You might as well buy a mac pro. The components to build an 8 core hackintosh (dual processor mobo + 2 intel xeon processors) end up being just about the same cost as it is if you buy it from Apple.

You can build a quad core hacky for under $800 but just the dual processor mobos are $500ish plus the processors are anywhere from $600 to $1200 a piece depending on how fast you go. I researched this quite a bit before doing my current build...

You could go with a core i7-970 which is 6 cores and still be enough under Apple's prices to justify the build

DIING - 2000 posts!!!

I just bought myself a i7 6core. Damn i got about 40-45% less cpu usage from my previous quad AMD. So full mix project is up about 45-55% of CPu usage. I can't see myself kill the CPU now. Perhaps if i used crazy oversampling on VCC but other then that, no fuckin way.

Tomorrow I'll post my build...I'm away from home and I'm writing with my macbook.
I remember pretty much everything but I don't remember exactly which video card I have (it's a nvidia).

Rich, I'm kind of amazed your i7 is starting to get bogged down. Mine always has plenty of juice for me!!

Me too mate, I think it's got something
To do with logic on the most part but can't afford Cubendo 6 right now and I'm pricing up alternatives :)

Dont use kontakt because its shit

Logic is super efficient on OSX. Dont think you should have any problems wih yout i7 iMac
