8-core hackintosh

Mines the original i7 one of the first batch could I put a SSD in place of the DVD drive?

Clean preferences
repair HD (software repair ;) )
put in a second HD for audio and use an external dvd burner
Dont use kontakt because its shit

Logic is super efficient on OSX. Dont think you should have any problems wih yout i7 iMac

How do clean pref?

That definitely won't work. You need the specialized piece from OWC - I know of literally zero alternatives that will work, as it has to fit the specific formfactor of a superdrive.

OWC ships international - what's the issue there?

This is my build:

CPU: Intel i7 950 3.06GHz
MB: Gigabyte X58 UD5
RAM: 6GB Kingston
Video: nVidia Geforce GTS 250

hard drive, dvd, etc... what you want.

It's important to choose the right video card because if you install a not supported one (not supported by oSx) when OSX starts you can't see anything on your monitor. There is a very usefull guide about the various video cards supported by the various version of osX (search "video card supported osx 10.6.*" or something like that....it's a wiki-like site) . You have to choose a video card supported by the version you're installing (for example 10.6.2 in my case....or 10.6.5....it depends on your OSX).

p.s.
In my opinion a single quad core (with 8 virtual cores) is enough...or at least 6 core. A dual quad core hackintosh is a waste of money and time because you don't have all these options for the MB.

Rich, I'm kind of amazed your i7 is starting to get bogged down. Mine always has plenty of juice for me!!

My 920 was getting unusable in the end, as I was running all my stuff in real time. After overclocking it and printing most of my tracks offline, so I only use a fraction of what I used to, I still run at about ~70% for most sessions.

Definitely waiting on Intel to bring on the single-chip 8-cores. That's what my next upgrade is hinging on.

Never actually thought of this. But would it be able to keep my Mac G5 case an install new CPU, MB & Video card in there to upgrade it to an Mac Pro-ish Hackintosh system?

How many people on here are actually running Hackintosh?
From what I understand you can just use your LEGAL Mac OS X disc and install it on your computer, right?

I have a i7 930 and i max it all the time in my mixing session. I even have to bounce things down to finish a mix. I have kicked around the idea of a Hackintosh build but they seem so picky with parts and i don't know shit about Mac's. I just feel like i would have tons of problems.

I'm with Ermz and waiting for that 8 core to do my next build.

I don't get how the iMac i7 isn't working for you. I've got an iMac with the i7 in it (I think Jarkko has the same machine as me) with Pro Tools 9 and I'm nowhere near crapping out my CPU.

Yep you could do that.

I'm running Hackintosh, I spent about 900 bones on my build and it's just as stable as the Mac Pro I owned for 4 years, way faster though!

Seconded
