No, I understand what you mean, and it's true.
No, the criminal are not aware of all that lies behind what s/he doing; it lies in the uncounciousness! I guess most ppl are not aware of it. I'm certainly not aware of it most of the time, but at more serious things - well, mostly when trying to figure why I feel the way I do - I try to think about what might cause it.
But of course, these reasons do not change anything for the victim, so it should not change how we react on a crime (imho).
I don't mean that one should try to understand in order to forgive or accept, but in order to figure out a way to prevent new crimes. And to judge the act, only, and not the person as a person - the crminal's mind.
'Cause everyone has violent/murderish (if that's a word...?) feelings/fantasies. They come from all the frustration, anger and fantasies you haven't set to life, that is built up in your unconciousness. Most ppl are able to control all of this (even though they're unaware of it), but some cannot. They're not (or just to a small degree) mature when it comes to feelings. (I know that was put in a rather odd way, but I think it should be possible to understand what I mean.) That is the psyciatrical definition of matureness: To see the connection between feelings and actions; the difference between them, and being able to control the feelings so that you don't have to act on them.
Um, where was I heading...? Well, I'll come back to this another time if someone has questions on what I meant. Right now I just forgot all I wa going to say - if I didn't already finish...? Iih, well; there's a reason for that to, hehe. Forgetting this, I mean. (Smart post...)
