A LIFE ONCE LOST, EPICUREAN, ION VEIN and ARISE AND RUIN COMPLETE LINEUP

I dont want to insult Gate or Chris or anyone involved, but I just don't understand the metalcore friday. I don't think there are alot of metalcore people on the fence abotu coming to Powerfest, maybe im wrong, maybe im completely off but I have no idea :X

Why couldnt a cheap band like Warbringer be confirmed! :p

I agree, I don't understand it at all, oh well, Paganfest makes up for it somewhat. :p

It makes perfect sense.

Chicago Powerfest = spend money on headliners. Get supporting bands cheap. Headliners get people who would have gone anyways + some others. Cheap costing metalcore bands hopefully put some kids over the edge to come. Doesn't mean that a person going to the show has to be happy with it. But hell, ticket prices are cheap enough as it is.

Well I dont know the chicago scene, but is it honestly that big to break even? I would think he has to rely on a good % of people to travel, and for someone like me, 3 headliners and a few ok bands dont make me say OMFG I GOTSA GO TO POWERFEST

Not really. Its not like only metalcore or any core bands for that matter are cheaper than good metal bands, on top of that, like 2 or 3 of the bands are going to be playing here before Powerfest, so all of the metalcore kiddies will have seen the bands playing. But if it makes some people happy, good for them.

I gotta tell you....I REALLY think you are selling Epicurean way too short. I usually do not like screaming vocals, but the music balanced with clean vocals makes it easy to overlook the screaming. I am actually looking forward to seeing these guys. Try and listen to a couple of songs all the way through before you judge.

lol... I haven't heard of any of those bands at all, except Ion Vein. I have more of a tolerance for metalcore and groove metal than most people here, so I'll be interested in checking them out.

They are the only ones of the 4 I might watch just to see it live and maybe change my mind...

Thanks for the news, Rob!

I've heard those Ion Vein clowns before. I've heard OF Epicurean, but am not familiar with their sound. I have never heard even the names A Life Once Lost or Arise and Ruin. Interesting that ALOL (LOL!) gets the direct support slot, are they relatively "big" or up-and-coming in whatever circles they run in?

EDIT: And does having a band called "Epicurean" mean that The Pearl Room will be serving much better food that night? :)

Ken

Epicurean... Used to be Black Metal... Then Dark Metal... and Now a more of MetalCore with a Gothic feel (with the keys)...

they are great performers and great people to talk to.

I have heard of Epicurean before as well but never listened. I must say that so far I am liking it! :) Once again, I love the opportunity to discover new music. As far as people complaining about the "metal-core" or whatever, ya know, look at the fest as a whole. You've got strong headliners and that alone is going to bring people in. I think it's well-rounded and has enough of a balance to appeal to a lot of different folks. As Chris or Rob mentioned before, the lineup is done now and the attendance will speak for itself. The opinions of this board (mine included) are not indicative of the metal community. ;)

Now let's get rid of this winter and bring on May 1st! :headbang:

Do you honestly think fans of Testament/ICed Earth/Ensiferum enjoy metalcore?

No disrespect, I really hope the weekend goes well and successful on the financial end, and it would have been nice to see Testament again, but I'll keep Powerfest on my radar for 2009. As mentioned previously this is more for the Chicago area metalheads and us out of towners are a bonus, and I will give props that I really enjoyed Powerfest and the bands that played in 2006, and I would support the right lineup (for my tastes). As alluded to in other posts I think I am too old school in my musical taste that doesn't draw (classic thrash, old school metal, classic bands, etc) newer fans to make these successful in the U.S. I will keep an eye on the TMT Metalfest for 2009 maybe if they are successful this year and next year might be better too but for my tastes I think Keep It True XI, Rocklahoma, Headbangers Open Air, Wacken Open Air, and ProgPower will be my festival fixes for this year.
:OMG:

:headbang::headbang::kickass::kickass::headbang::zombie::ill::puke: :headbang:(my version of two weeks in Germany with huge german metal crowds, beer, and headbanging)

I have to admit, even though I'm not a fan of a lot of the metalcore / mallcore bands, some of them are really good live. Regardless, I intend to enjoy myself all weekend. I've only really listened to Suidakra, Testament, Iced Earth, and Tyr. Yet, they're all awesome.

From what I understood, you said the headliners are good, but dont necessarily bring everyone in, so wouldnt by ur logic bring bands in that are similiar to the headliners?

No, I don't think that would be my logic. It would be pointless to bring in a bunch of supporting bands similar to the headliners because that is not the nature of this fest. It's not supposed to be a focus on a particular genre of metal. There are obviously other fests that take care of that, whether it be prog, death or what have you.

I won't comment on the bands, as in all honesty, I have not heard any of them.
I have heard enough metalcore to know it's not my thing.

I get it from a biz perspective that these bands might bring in a younger audience that wouldn't come for IE or Testament.

I guess my disappointment is the fact that there are a lot of younger metal bands, even here in the states, that are quickly gaining attention that I feel would have been a good fit for the fest.

I dunno, between Gigantour, Ozzfest, Sounds of the Underground, Taste of Chaos, etc, I think there are enough outlets for Metalcore where it doesn't seem necessary at a festival which deems itself, "A Weekend of Powerful Metal"

I will have to trust that Rob and Chris know what they are doing with these picks, as I am not at all familiar with any of these bands (well, except for Ion Vein of course).

Well I would say viking, folk, thrash, power, heavy and thrash metal is pretty broad, no?

Do you honestly think fans of Testament/ICed Earth/Ensiferum enjoy metalcore?

Some do, yes. It depends on your taste and/or how narrow-minded you are. I assume there is little crossover overall though. So you get one crowd for Iced Earth/Testament and another crowd for the core bands. Unless, of course, these core bands are easily seen on other tours as someone mentioned.

I am sure Rob and Chris are trying to get as much cross-pollination as possible. It seems like most of the successful American fests focus on one or two genres. This is a different approach.
